Pratchett (Small Gods) has won an ardent following with his tales of Discworld and his particular brand of comedic fantasy. This latest installment, however, is unlikely to widen his readership. It's circle time on the Discworld; portentous round depressions are showing up everywhere, even in bowls of porridge. Worlds are weaving closer to one another, with unpredictable results. Only the three wacky witches, formidable Granny Weatherwax, crusty Nanny Ogg and scatterbrained Magrat Garlick, can ensure that the worst does not happen: the return of the elves. Trouble is, almost everyone else in the kingdom of Lancre is eager to welcome the "lords and ladies" back. They've forgotten that elves are nasty creatures who live only to torture their prey?humans especially. It's a tempting premise, but underdeveloped by Pratchett, who relies too heavily on his trademark humor, veering into the silly and sophomoric, to fuel the early portions of this fantasy. Only in the last third of the novel does he strike a successful balance among action, imagination and comedy. There is much fun to the tale once the smiling, sadistic elves actually appear, befuddling the townfolk with their beauty and illusion. An earlier arrival would have done much to strengthen this uneven novel.

This particularly excellent example of Pratchett's Discworld tales tackles the subject of elves. These elves present the image of being cute only to deceive humans. In fact, they are about as agreeable as Hitler's SS. So when a bunch of them decides to crash an entire human kingdom and all its activities, problems arise. The solution is Granny Weatherwax and the witches she leads, who are not exactly nice people, either, exhibiting, as they do, positive glee in slaughtering elves. When applied to as large a body count as this novel affords, Pratchett's light tone is a little unsettling, but otherwise the book is a superior example of Pratchett's inimitable, seemingly endlessly fertile wit. Discworld's loyal readers are beginning to constitute as doughty a band as Xanth's, and all fantasy collections should provide for them accordingly. This is my favorite discworld novel (the other being Hogfather). Partly because Granny and Nanny and Margrat are my favorite discworld characters (apart from DEATH). Partly because the book is real fun, thoughtful, has a good and intersting plot and some amazing turnings. Honestyl, you, too, thought elves were nice, didn't you?
If you are a beginner in Pratchett`s discworld this book is a possible first (apart from the best idea of reading all the 28 novels in their chronologic order).
Only 4 stars? I think the end is a bit forced, the antler king too much of a deus ex machina for my taste. Did we really have need of him with Granny in charge?

Margrat Garlick is about to have her dream wedding. She is marrying the King. The stuff fairy tales are made of. A faerie tale is what she gets. Every bride's nightmare. The faerie host have decided they would like to crash the festivities and the Queen wants the King for her husband. At least until she's tired of him. It's up to Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, the librarian and a host of others to stop them.

I enjoyed this one, but even Pratchett mentions you need some background on this one. I strongly suggest you read at least Wyrd Sisters and Witches Abroad prior to this. It'll give you some idea of what's going on. Pratchett plays with most of the British elven legends as well as few of the Pagan Pantheon to bring this one off. (Actually, he sticks pretty close to the old legends and humorously traces their evolution into modern conception). I liked this novel not only for the usual humor, but also for the suspense aspect of it. I recommend this one if you like the fairy tales

Terry Pratchett's Discworld novel "Lords and Ladies" main plot line is the battle of Granny Weahterwax and her fellow witches, Nanny Ogg and Magrat, against an invading covent of elves. Granny Weatherwax is a well-known character, who first appeared in "Equal Rites" and was further developed in "Wyrd Sisters". If you are a fan of Pratchett's Discworld series, then you will probably have certain "favourite" characters. In my case, Granny Weatherwax certainly does not belong into that category. Sorry, but she just does not have that special something that makes characters lovable. She is not of the bumbling wizard variety, she does not have the all-powerfull-yet-terrible-naive aura of DEATH, she is just an old woman with typical witch attributes. The story itself is also rather predictable: Ignorant villagers free other-worldly menace which witches have to clean up. From the first pages you know how the book is going to end... something which does not happen very often in Discworld novels (most of the time you are asking yourself where in the world the story is going to culminate). The only thing that prevented me from putting this book back down after the first few chapter was my firm belief that it would have to get better before it got worse... well it did, at least a little bit. Mainly because, as always, there are lots of little characters on the side line which add to the scurillity and general weirdness. Like the king, who wishes to get married and orders for books on the subject... only because of his horrible handwriting he does not get a book about maritial, but about martial arts. Or Casanunda, the world's second greatest lover, an amourous dwarf with, you guessed it, an ever-present stepladder. To summarize, "Lords and Ladies" is a rather mediocre work, a far way from, for example "Hogfather" or "Reaper Man". (Dies ist eine Amazon.de an der Uni-Studentenrezension.)
