When the CIA's efforts to extract Dr. Sung Kwan, a North Korean scientist and an invaluable source on Kim Jong Il's nuclear ambitions, result in the deaths of Kwan and the rescue team, Wells's significant other, Jennifer Exley, searches to identify the person in U.S. intelligence who compromised Kwan's security. Meanwhile, Wells returns to Afghanistan, the scene of much of the action in The Faithful Spy, to find out what outside country has been helping the Taliban reassert itself. While the mole hunt will be familiar to genre buffs and the characters and the perils they face aren't as nuanced as those in John le Carré or even David Ignatius, the author's plausible scenario distinguishes this from most spy thrillers. This is a tightly written modern spy thriller, starting in the Yellow Sea off the shores of North Korea. An exfiltration attempt of America's most important mole in North Korea, a scientist involved in this country's nuclear program is going kablooey. Meanwhile in Washington, CIA agent John Wells (the hero of the author's previous novel) is back on duty. In this new novel, Berenson imagines a future clash with the Chinese and offers a sophisticated vision how such a conflict could come about.

The accidental ramming of a Chinese trawler by an American destroyer ignites conflict within the Chinese leadership. Adding to the complexity is a new alliance between China and Iran, a secret one between China and the Taliban and the usual moles on each side. Li Ping, the head of the People's Liberation Army, is Berenson's most studied character: an abstemious military man, who exercises regularly, and who wants China's new wealth to be more evenly distributed among its poor, especially during a short-term economic slowdown. Li's purity fuses with his political extremism. He concocts a plot to draw China into a limited war with the United States, in order to oust the more personally decadent and free-market-oriented members of the Standing Committee. The conflict feeds Chinese nationalism and resentment after the trawler is accidentally rammed. When the crisis gets out of control, China's military modernization allows for a submarine-launched torpedo to elude the U.S. Navy's electronic defenses and hit an errant destroyer.

This is not an outlandish scenario, considering that in 2006 a Chinese Song-class attack submarine, equipped with Russian-made wake-homing torpedoes, stalked the USS Kitty Hawk battle carrier group in the Pacific. The sub surfaced within firing range before being detected only five miles from the supercarrier itself.

Berenson's plot is intelligently designed and moves quickly, the protagonist seems a bit overloaded with clichés à la Mike Martin ("The Afghan" by F. Forsyth) and most of the characters owe Tom Clancy a certain mechanical twist. There are also detailed descriptions of military technicalities that can be distracting, but just before you get the impression that Berenson wants to show off his knowledge in these matters, he saves his tale with a bit of wry humor. Berenson has been unfavorably compared with Len Deighton or John Le Carré. Yet, Berenson doesn't even pretend to be a second Le Carré, he is more focused on geopolitics than the byzantine minds of Smiley and his people.

His scenario is believable in many parts. While the United States is focused on Middle Eastern problems, China moves forward as a national security challenge. Its economic rise is now being followed by its military rise. The object is not a war with America, but rather the ability to deny the U.S. Navy complete access to coastal Asia. Still, this would not be enough to start even a limited war. China's military establishment aims to merely create the conditions for a conflict that could arise only through power plays that lead to accidents and miscalculations.

Der zweite Roman über den CIA Agenten John Wells ist ebenso spannend.
Berenson schreibt ein Englisch, an das man sich leicht gewöhnt (gilt für solche wie mich, die Schulenglisch gelernt haben).
