Operating systems are large and complex, and yet must function with near-absolute reliability--that's why they're a class unto themselves in the field of software development. Since its first release 20 years ago, "the dinosaur book"--Operating System Concepts by Avi Silberschatz, Peter Baer Galvin, and Greg Gagne--has been a valuable reference for designers and implementers of operating systems. The newly released sixth edition of this book maintains the volume's authority with new sections on thread management, distributed processes, and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). There's also information on the workings of the latest crop of operating systems, including Microsoft Windows 2000, Linux, FreeBSD, and compact operating systems for handheld devices.

This book is concerned with the design of operating systems, which is to say it enumerates the problems that pop up in the creation of efficient systems and explores alternative ways of dealing with them, detailing the advantages and shortcomings of each. For example, in their chapter on scheduling CPU activity, the authors explain several algorithms (first-come, first-served, and round-robin scheduling, among others) for allocating the capacity of single and multiple processors among jobs. They highlight the relative advantages of each, and explain how several real-life operating systems solve the problem. They then present the reader with exercises--this book is essentially a university textbook--that inspire thought and discussion. --David Wall

Topics covered: The problems faced by designers of system software for electronic computers, and strategies that have been developed over the past 20 years to address (and, in some cases, solve ) them. Problems of CPU scheduling, memory allocation, paging, processes and threads, storage management, distributed processes and storage mechanisms, and security are all discussed thoroughly and with many authoritative references. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

4.0 von 5 Sternen provides basic knowledge of Operating Systems, 18. März 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Diese Rezension stammt von: Operating System Concepts (Gebundene Ausgabe)
Although the book does a theoretically approach to Operating Systems (referred to as "OS" in the following text), it is easy to follow the intention of the author. I'm student in mathematics and computer science and I currently attending a lecture about operating systems. This book is written in a language that is easy to understand. The reader is able to follow the concept of Operating Systems step by step. A lot of examples, taken rather from real life than computer related, illustrate the problems while developing a appropriate OS. The reader does not need a lot of prerequisites. With a basic knowledge of mathematics and a ability in understanding logical problems the reader will have no difficulties throughout the text. The concept of each chapter is effective. At the beginning a more or less detailed description of the background is provided. Then the author explains in detail the possible solutions or function of different approaches in the problems, i.e. : Memory Management, CPU-Scheduling, and much more. In the end a summary and some exercises conclude the chapter. Personally I would recommend this book to students, who want a basic understanding of how OSs do work. I have to mention the following This book lacks in giving very few programs. But on the other hand this makes it easier for readers, who do not have a deep knowledge of programming languages. I think it's a good book, which does give an overview of OSs. For reader's, who are experienced in computer science, there will be books, that will provide more detailed information, especially encoding and example programs.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Understandable Introduction into OS-oncepts, 4. Januar 2001
Von Ein Kunde
Diese Rezension stammt von: Operating System Concepts (Gebundene Ausgabe)
This book has been used for the operating systems lecture at the university of Muenster and it provides an excellent path into understanding its concepts. It is written in an enjoyable and easy-to-read style. The different concepts, especially process synchronization, can be quickly understood. This book is highly recommendable.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Less than adequate for students, 27. April 2000
Diese Rezension stammt von: Operating System Concepts (Gebundene Ausgabe)
I am currently using this book as a textbook in an introductory course in computer systems architecture. To say it falls short of the mark is to be very kind; this is absolutely the worst textbook I have ever used! Even if it were not filled with grammatical and punctuation errors (which it has in abundance!) it would still be unfit for use in this application. The authors make far too many assumptions regarding the knowledge of the readers of this book and make almost no effort to offer clarifying or explanatory passages to guide the student through this book. Even when examples are offered, they are just as confusing as the text, since they assume the reader is familiar with the commands and logical operators used in writing the algorithms presented as examples. A reader who is not familiar with these terms is left totally bewildered and still without any knowledge of the meaning of said algorithms. The very least they could have done is to include a glossary of terms and a listing of the programming commands and operators (with definitions) used in writing the algorithms in the book so that the reader can use them as a reference. This book may very well serve a purpose as a reference book for those already very familiar with operating systems architecture; but students (and educational institutions) should shy away from it, at least when it is offered for use in an introductory course. For me, it serves as an over-priced paperweight; I have to refer to other books to learn the subject I am currently studying.
