This book is not about sexual expression among consenting adults. It's a deeply disturbing, even repellent, narrative which describes rape, child molestation, bestiality, and other forms of sexual violence in detail.

I gave this book a low rating because I think the general reader would not enjoy reading it. I do, however, recommend it as a historical text. It reminds us that even the most genteel, refined society has its dark edge. As such, it is an important book, especially for students of psychology, criminology, and Victorian history.

This books documents with tireless obsession the ceaseless sex life of a Victorian man. Whether fact or fiction, it is a fascinating and often titillating psychological study. But I suspect that the fond recollections other reviewers have expressed for this book refer to expurgated versions. The Kincaid version shows the author in an abominable light. The protagonist is an upper-class sociopath who treats women and girls as sexual playthings without the slightest indication of a human conscience. When not visiting prostitutes, he is generally preying on servant girls, and when he cannot bribe them he simply rapes them. He recounts in step-by-step detail his rape of a ten-year old girl, revelling in his fascination with the act. By way of apology, the editor, a distinguished professor of English at USC, comments that "...we ought to remain aware that such terms [as rape and sexual harrassment] would not be altogether meaningful then." The terms may have changed, but the nineteenth century is not so far in the past that rape and child sexual abuse are anything other than that. This is a revolting book.

Valuable as a medical study for teachers, doctors and students of sexuality and sexual pathology, but contains objectioable material as a work of erotica.
