First published in 1971, Ursula Le Guin's SF novel The Lathe of Heaven combines a sheaf of future possibilities--including an early evocation of global warming--with a parable about wishes that has the terrible clarity of a fairytale.

The uncomfortably gifted George Orr is desperately drugging himself to avoid sleep, because he knows his dreams can change the world. Psychiatrist Dr Haber begins with good intentions of curing Orr, but when he finds he can shape Orr's "effective dreams" and force his own wishes into reality, the lure of power is too much. Though Haber believes he wants only to do good, he's also quick to upgrade himself from obscurity in a windowless office to Director of the prestigious Oregon Oneirological Institute.

During his flawed attempts to create an earthly paradise, we see that each sweeping change makes matters worse. Let's fix over-population: suddenly there's a new past in which humanity was almost destroyed by plague, billions of people are written out of existence, and Haber drinks a toast--"to a better world". Let's fix war: the hapless Orr's dreaming mind can only imagine and create a new threat that unites Earth against outside foes. Let's fix racism: the result is even more painful. As Orr broods:

The end justifies the means. But what if there never is an end? All we have is means.

In this mad round of poisoned wishes, it becomes necessary to stop. But power-crazed Haber refuses to stop....

Ursula K. Le Guin is one of science fiction's greatest writers. She is also an acclaimed author of powerful and perceptive nonfiction, fantasy, and literary fiction. She has received many honors, including six Nebula and five Hugo Awards, the National Book Award, the Pushcart Prize, the Newbery, the Pilgrim, the Tiptree, and citations by the American Library Association. She has written over a dozen highly regarded novels and story collections. Her SF masterworks are The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), The Dispossessed (1974), and The Lathe of Heaven (1971).

George Orr has dreams that come true--dreams that change reality. He dreams that the aunt who is sexually harassing him is killed in a car crash, and wakes to find that she died in a wreck six weeks ago, in another part of the country. But a far darker dream drives George into the care of a psychotherapist--a dream researcher who doesn't share George's ambivalence about altering reality.

The Lathe of Heaven is set in the sort of worlds that one would associate with Philip K. Dick, but Ms. Le Guin's treatment of the material, her plot and characterization and concerns, are more akin to the humanistic, ethically engaged, psychologically nuanced fiction of Theodore Sturgeon. This work convinces not with the plot (no one should read a Le Guin book only because of the plot, because her books can give the reader much more through the intellectual level) but with the philosophical contence. This work is her most "eastern" one and many chapters start with a quotation of a chinese philosopher. It is good for the reader to know these works, because they help to understand the metaphorical level of the book. In this book Le Guin criticises the western or modern way of thinking: every thing is possible, you only have to try. The psychotherapist how uses George's dreams is in no way an evil man. He tries to do good things, but he tries so hard, that he doesnt see the evil he does. In contrast to him George realizes that no one has the right to change the world and that he may not use his "talent". This is clearly the taoistic principle of non-acting and a harsh critic on modern, western thinking. I really enjoed this book and had to overthink many things after I had finished it.

Excellent commentary on how idealists obsessively try to influence and shape social policy in order "to make things right," and how their good intentions almost always have disasterous unintended consequences. But do they learn from their mistakes? No, they just keep on trying...

The Lathe of Heaven should be required reading in this time of political correctness, when so many people are obsessed with equality at all costs. This book shows how bleak such a reality would be.

If you enjoy fiction that has strong social commentary (think Lord of the Flies, 1984, Brave New World), then this book is for you.

This was my first Ursula K. LeGuin novel, and my last. After reading this I have no clue why she's gotten so much acclaim over the years. It reads like a sorry attempt to be Philip K. Dick (a genuine genius). It's a good idea poorly executed. I had to force myself to finish it.

Maybe I should have tried The Left Hand of Darkness instead.
