Marvellous, just absolutely marvellous, 14. Dezember 2002

5 years ago, my best friend urged me to read Rice's books but I never got to it. A couple of years ago a good friend of mine lend me her copy of Rice's 'The Witching Hour' - which, up to this point, I have read 3 times already -, that's where it all started!I bought the complete Box-Set of the first four 'Vampire Chronicles' in November, and now, a week before Christmas, I'm already halfway through 'Queen of the Damned', and with that I ended up buying the rest of her 'Vampire Chronicles' including her 'New Tales of the Vampire' and also the 'Witches Chronicles'! With Rice's books, you just can't put them down. Of course, there are some moments that seem so tiring, but suddenly the story starts to pick up and unfold itself - then you're hooked! One notices the state of maturity of Rice's writing as it develops through each book: how the story gets more complex, the play of time and setting...and of course, her rich, lustrous descriptive dialogues and proses, etc. What more can I say? Her books are just amazing. If you like her Vampires, you should get to know her Witches, they will come into play later on! (e.g. in Merrick - eventhough it wasn't the 'main clan'). Don't be put off by the size of 'The Witching Hour', I tell you, it worths the time!...Happy Reading! :-)

It's worth at least starting..., 26. Mai 2000
It is difficult to rate the first four of this series as one... Interview (vol. 1) is one of the most sensuous, moving, and mesmerizing tales I have had the good fortune to lose myself in. Louis is a beautiful hero torn between a passion for a life he chose but now cannot condone and the paralyzing fear of dilerberately ending it. Lestat (vol. 2) is an interesting history, at times engaging, and written tolerably well. Queen (vol. 3) ossilates between being an insane jumble of unimportant characters and a blast of miserably heavy-handed metaphor. Its only redemption being the new character, Khaymen. Body Thief (vol.4) is simply another mundane pulp fiction story among thousands. It was in Interview that I fell so deeply in love with Louis, Claudia, and Armand. Now, besotted, I plod through the rest of the series hoping for glimpses of the characters for which I developed such a passion. Rice's fatal mistake was in abandoning her original passionate and philosophical hero (Louis) for the excessively prideful and narcissistic Lestat who becomes more intolerable as the series progresses. He, as a character, commits the cardinal sin of not only failing to continually develop, but actually dissolves into something two dimensional and utterly predictable. As for the beloved characters, they make obligatory appearances in which they are nearly unrecognizable compared to their former selves, only occasionally living up to the standards set in Interview. The worst of this begins in Queen. As to the criticism regarding religious soapboxes and homosexuality. Ignore most of it. Enter the world of these vampires with an open mind and allow yourself to wonder at the possibilities presented. You'll probably find that you opened a door into parts of your own well-hidden world. The descriptive writing never fails to be intricate, erotic, and intoxicating. Rice, at least, manages to keep that fairly well intact. There are two more after these four and so far nothing as good as Interview. Regardless, if you do choose to delve into this realm of beautiful and sumptuous prose, be sure to read them in order..

Queen of horrors!, 1. November 1998

Over the years, I have read all of Anne Rice's books. As I go through the series, I find that she dives deeper into the great divide. In the beginning, you have Lestat and Louis, but as you further your journey, Rice brings about other more interesting characters. I have often wondered what ever happened to Louis. He seemed to have disappeared after his brief visit in the Body Theif. As you go on, Memnoch messes with your brain because he is so difficult to understand. It took me almost a year to finally finish it. I kept on throwing it aside because it was a difficut read. I am one not to put a book down until I am finished with it. Anne's witch series created a whole new world. A world where witches are good. It goes the same with the vampire series. I felt like I wanted to be a vampire because of the way she portrayed the life of one. Overall, I am thrill to death with her writing, and is always looking forward to thatnew book. I have recently bought Armand, and can't wait to read it. Keep them coming Anne.
