Amazon.com

Say what you will about the author of The Real Diana, but Lady Colin Campbell certainly is no practitioner of noblesse oblige. This is a book for those who like their gossip explicit and in large quantities, and who aren't bothered by little details like verifiable attribution. (The vast majority of quotes in this book are from "a member of the Wales household," "a lady-in-waiting," "a courtier," and most ironically of all, "a friend.") Lady Campbell claims to be the person whom Diana first approached to write the tell-all biography that Andrew Morton was later to author. And though she turned down that opportunity, this is her second publication to cash in on her "insider status" (Diana in Private was her first), which is seemingly a reference to her title by marriage and a casual acquaintance with the princess.

With its paucity of named sources, it's probably impossible to authoritatively separate fact from fiction in The Real Diana, though it does seem that what with affairs, petty vengeances, and temper tantrums, Di would have had little time left for her courtly duties. Campbell's style is lively enough, and she has some interesting insights into the modern British aristocracy and its unconventional values. But are you truly curious to learn not only the details of the late princess's lovers' techniques, but also the names of the two therapists Diana went to for colonic irrigation? --John Longenbaugh -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: Gebundene Ausgabe .

From Library Journal

This recent addition to the profusion of unauthorized "tell-all" biographies of the late Princess of Wales rehashes many of the sensational assertions made in Campbell's 1992 work, Diana in Private. Depicting herself as a palace insider, the author makes the unsubstantiated claim that Diana was sexually active with her future husband and other lovers prior to marriage and that she had many lovers after that union. She asserts that the princess was mentally ill, speculating that she suffered variously from bulimia, depression, self-mutilation, paranoia, and, perhaps, schizophrenia. While it seems clear that Diana was troubled and unhappy, these assertions of serious illness are made with only the flimsiest of support. Even the capable reading of Roe Kendall cannot overcome the purple prose of this gossipy tome. Libraries compelled to purchase it because of the demand for all things Diana will be tempted to classify it in the fiction section. Not recommended.ALinda Bredengerd, Univ. of Pittsburgh Lib., Bradford

4.0 von 5 Sternen Read Andrew Morton's book on Diana, then read this one, 7. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Lady Colin Campbell writes a royal insiders book on Princess Diana, giving a biased view of the late Princess. Lady Campbell digs up lots of dirt on the Princess regarding lovers, her extravagant lifestyle, her "mental illness"(who wouldn't be mentally ill having to deal with all the pressures Diana faced - and with zero support), and goes into great detail on the last few weeks of Diana's life. Many of the sources are anonymous - others are various royals, palace workers, family friends. A great deal of information came from Lady Colin's conversations with the Princess herself. This book looks at all sides of the Princess - the good and especially the bad. For a more " fairy-tale" one sided view of Diana read Andrew Morton's book. Lady Colin Campbell at times seems to despise and/or is immensely jealous of Diana, and often comes to the defense of Prince Charles instead of seeing Diana's view. For example, the author could not understand why Diana was upset that Charles wanted to say goodbye, prior to his marriage, to Camilla face to face. The author felt this was a"gentlemanly" thing to do, and felt Diana was being immature . I would recommend reading this book to any avid Diana readers (after reading Morton's book) to help get the big picture of Diana's life and how her peers viewed her

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent primer for Diana Portrait of a Troubled Princess, 3. September 1999
Von Ein Kunde
I really liked this book and reading the latest reviews on Amazon.com about it.

Seems to me, an American with a sense of humor, that the reader from Washington DC had all her points neatly proven by the pretentious lady from "New York, at the moment".

1.0 von 5 Sternen Worthless trash -- and "unwashed," "brainless" Americans?, 30. Juni 1999
Von Ein Kunde
One "Amazon customer reviewer" here is all praise for both Lady Campbell and her book. She takes other Amazon customer reviewers to task for disapproving of both Lady Campbell and the book, and also accuses Americans of being unwashed and brainless. Sounds to me like that review was written by Lady Campbell herself. It's just her style.

This person "from Washington, D.C.", who gives the book a rating 5 stars, says: "... it is also true that the book will not be well received in the United States where Diana still enjoys a kind of sacred status. The shrill, near hysterical and actually, quite nasty (given some of the writers' decision to condemn Lady Colin-Campbell as evil for having had the misfortune of being born with a birth defect. ... [The] tones of the reviews here on Amazon attests to fact that the great unwashed of middle America will never really understand the British at all. But -- for those with a bit more in the brain cell department interested in a great gossipy read written by someone who actually knows how the system works -- I suggest you send Amazon some dosh and get the book."

No doubt this lady will be surprised to learn, if she bothers to learn, that Americans can read and are allowed to express their own opinions. We also take baths AND showers, and spend more time getting a better education than the Brits do, too. And here's a surprise: anyone calling the author Lady Colin-Campbell definitely has it wrong!

For the most part, we do not worship living human beings (possibly excepting movie stars.) We do expect to see justice done, and often react badly when this doesn't happen, which may explain the reaction to this book in this country. I think, though, the unhappy reactions to the book are due to how bad the book is.

Diana was not worshipped here, though many admired her. Many other Americans didn't pay any attention to her at all. She did more good in her life than most of us will ever do. That her high profile and kindness made her imperfections so public is far more than most of us will ever have to endure. We, including Lady Campbell, for the most part keep our mistakes as well as our "birth defects" hidden. Diana should not have been made a target for such sludge. It is a truly dismal aspect of the general culture these days that books like this are written, and that the media perpetuates it mercilessly.

Lady Campbell has already published two books which contained enough unsubstantiated nasty rumors to attract income enough for Lady Campbell to live on for the rest of his or her life. There was no reason, other than greed, to start making up more.

The book is lousy. Lady Campbell (not Lady Colin-Campbell or Lady Colin -- her title came to her only because her husband was Lord Colin Campbell) seems once again to have published every nasty rumor ever whispered about the late Princess, which means that if you like gossip, you might enjoy it. Just remember please to think of it as fiction. If you've read the author's other two books, you've read this one already, I think.

One more point. Lady Campbell may travel among some of the social set. She does not travel in the royal one, despite he claims, and she does not understand "how the system works." Neither does the person in Washington, D.C.
