"I exist!" exclaims Ruby Lennox upon her conception in 1951, setting the tone for this humorous and poignant first novel in which Ruby at once celebrates and mercilessly skewers her middle-class English family. Peppered with tales of flawed family traits passed on from previous generations, Ruby's narrative examines the lives in her disjointed clan, which revolve around the family pet shop. But beneath the antics of her philandering father, her intensely irritable mother, her overly emotional sisters, and a gaggle of eccentric relatives are darker secrets--including an odd "feeling of something long forgotten"--that will haunt Ruby for the rest of her life. Kate Atkinson earned a Whitbread Prize in 1995 for this fine first effort. -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

From Publishers Weekly

The narrator's insistent voice and breezy delivery animates this enchanting first novel by a British writer who won one of the 1993 Ian St. James Awards for short stories. Ruby Lennox is a quirky, complex character who relates the events of her life and those of her dysfunctional family with equal parts humor, fervor and candor-starting with her moment of conception in York, England, in 1959: "I exist!" Ruby then describes the family she is to join. Her parents own a pet shop; her mother, Bunty, bitterly rues having married her philandering husband, George, and daydreams about what her life might have been. Ruby has two older sisters, willful Gillian and melancholy Patricia. Through its ambitious structure, the novel also charts five generations and more than a century of Ruby's family history, as reported in "footnotes" that follow relevant chapters. (For example, a passage about a pink glass button reveals the story of its original owner, Ruby's great-grandmother Alice, who will abandon her young family and run off with a French magician.) Ruby's richly imagined account includes both the details of daily life and the several tragic events that punctuate the family's mundane existence. Though the "footnote" entries are not quite as gripping as those rendered in Ruby's richly vernacular, energetic recitation, Atkinson's ebullient narrative style captures the troubled Lennox family with wit and poignant accuracy.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Well done, Ruby!, 20. März 1998
I discovered Kate Atkinson through her second novel, _Human Croquet_. I quite enjoyed it, but it was my 13-yr-old daughter who liked it so much that she later picked up Atkinson's debut novel about Ruby Lennox and her far-flung family. My kid has solid instincts!

Both novels explore dysfunctional families through the eyes of the children stranded in those families. Both narratives are marked by sudden chronological shifts and reveal information that the narrators realistically don't have access to; through this device Atkinson raises interesting questions about the nature of memory, of time, of family itself.

I think _Behind the Scenes... is the better book. Certainly it is more consistent in tone, very funny, but with the humor of a survivor, looking back over years of neglect, emotional abuse, deceit, outright tragedy, and, above all, years of (almost) unremitting bleakness. The characters are well drawn, and even the most repugnant of them is worthy of some sympathy. That Atkinson can relate all this and make it so incredibly readable is a testament to her talent. Although I occasionally found her sentence structure irksome, that is a minor quibble, especially when one considers the images she is able to create in just a few words, as when Ruby is trying to reconcile her idea of what love is with the "autistic motherhood" of Bunty. Ruby has been talking about her mother off and on for several hundred pages, but this phrase, in the last few pages of the novel, sums up perfectly that part of Bunty's character that was most important to Ruby.

A good read; I recommend it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A wonderful novel!, 13. November 2006
Von Nightwitch "does it matter?" (Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Germany) - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen
Diese Rezension stammt von: Behind the Scenes at the Museum (Taschenbuch)

I keep reading that this is such a hilarious book with great humour in it, but actually, I found it rather sad. True, the sadness is lightened (or rather, made bearable) by the entertaining, ironic tone, but most of the "jokes" are highly cynical in nature and really just reflect the protagonist's inner sadness.
Her life is clearly overshadowed by certain events in her childhood, as well as her mother's rejection and the bad relationship of her parents.

True, the "secret" is predictable, but the very fact that so many clues are being dropped made me eager to read on, because it was not so much WHAT happened, but HOW it happened that came to be the big question.

One of the most interesting points is definitely the narrative voice. Ruby's tone changes from childhood to adulthood along with her degree of maturity, and although narrated in retrospect, the reader comes to realise that she is actually an unreliable narrator and begins to question her account of her life.

Another one is, of course, the relation to time. Although stories are usually told forward in nature, this one keeps going backwards, in rather expansive footnotes, that do not merely add to the storyline, but create a new one. This really shows how the lives of these generations interconnect, from Alice to Ruby.

The novel focuses on women from different generations, who were socialised into certain gender roles that are perceived as oppressive, but that is not all there is to it.

The story is wonderfully written, and it involves the reader on so many levels! I could go on forever about it, since we are going over the book in my English Literature course at uni right now, but before buying, what you need to know is basically:
It's a touching book. It will make you laugh, cry, reflect and anticipate what is to come. It can also be read in different ways and is therefore suitable as light-hearted entertainment as well as a piece of literature to analyse seriously.

Read it, you won't regret it!

I bought this book based on the glowing recommendations. I could not even finish it. I cared nothing for the protagonist. I could not get into the story at all. Since everyone else seems to have loved it, maybe it's just me, but I sure wish I could get my money back.
