It's refreshing to come across the unexpected. When it comes to rock star bios, one always fears another tale of depravity, excess, and mania. A nice story about a nice person who happens to have a superabundance of talent defies that expectation, and such a defiant story is pop diva Carey's, according to Nickson. In an era when the need for regular MTV play dictates that stars look as good as they sound, Carey is blessed with both looks and an incredible vocal range--a combination that often enough brings stardom, and that is essentially what the book is about. Carey's a star, and if you're interested in how she came to be but don't want the distractions of a lot of deep, boring stuff, Nickson's nice, inoffensive book is for you.
