I am delighted by this book: not just by the recipes, but also by the very sturdy hardcover and the spiral binding of the pages inside. Essential aspects of slow cooking are clearly and carefully explained, and there are lots of suggestions for ingredient substitutions and variations. Nutrition breakdowns are given for each recipe, and I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the majority of the recipes in this book are low fat (e.g. fat 9g, of which 3g is saturated fat). The only thing which this book obviously lacks, and also obviously needs, is an ingredient glossary for overseas users. The recipes are so oriented towards the US market that it would be a substantial benefit for the rest of us to know what we can buy in our local supermarkets to use instead of "liquid smoke" and "Bisquick Original baking mix", and of course what she means by "half-and-half" (e.g. in Germany "Halb und Halb" is a mixture of pork and beef mince, whereas in the USA it is a mixture of half milk and half cream with 10-12% milk fat (!)). Otherwise it is a thoroughly recommendable book for anyone using a slow cooker, including someone who has never used one before.

If you thought crockpot cooking was a bad idea from the seventies, think again. This fabulous book has a wonderful variety of recipes that are easy, inexpensive, and newly healthy for a nineties audience. Not only does it provide plenty of recipes to keep you busy, but it also explains how to adapt your own favorite fast-cooking recipes to the slow cooker. As a working woman, I can't emphasize enough how this book has brought healthy, easy, hearty cooking into my life. I highly recommend it to anyone who is busy, but wants to eat well.
