Amazon.co.uk

The ‘surprise’ factor when reading the thrillers of Lee Child has, it must be admitted, vanished. Most readers who pick up the new book, The Hard Way, will be well aware that this extremely American narrative is, in fact, written by an Englishman. The days when early readers of Child (notably his American fans) would exclaim how amazing it was that Child got all the cultural reference points correct are long gone. And, in a way, that's not a bad thing--now we can judge the novels purely on their own terms. And if The Hard Way doesn't initially appear to be quite as impressive as its predecessors, that's not to say that it isn't a supremely assured piece of work.

Child's durable hero is, of course, ex-soldier Jack Reacher. Child's publishers claim 'men want to be him--women want to have him', and there's no denying that’s a considerable part of Reacher’s appeal. His footloose lifestyle and handy way with the trouble that he’s always encountering are handled by Child with great panache. In some ways, Reacher is the perfect existential hero: he owns nothing or no-one, and he is, in his turn, owned by nothing or no one. He is defined by the actions he undertakes--and that definition only lasts as long as the problem he is involved with. This one has an even wider range than usual, starting on a busy New York thoroughfare and moving to a violent finale across the Atlantic in the sylvan depths of the English countryside, with Jack up against some very dangerous opponents. Interestingly, Child’s publishers describe Jack Reacher in this novel as ‘invincible’, and (ironically) they put their finger on an interesting point in this latest entry. While Jack has always been supremely capable, earlier books have always had a genuine sense of danger--how the hell would Jack get himself out of the latest lethal situation? Here, the outcome seems less in doubt. But this is a minor quibble--Child could not write a bad book if he tried, and all the narrative momentum that propelled the earlier Reacher adventures is satisfyingly in evidence in his latest outing.

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In bestseller Child's 10th novel to feature ex-army MP Jack Reacher (after 2005's One Shot), a sidewalk cafe encounter in New York City plunges Reacher into one of his most challenging—and thoroughly engrossing—adventures to date. Acting out of "reflex and professional curiosity" (and the promise of a generous fee), Reacher agrees to help sinister ex-army officer Edward Lane, whose posse of six Special Forces veterans are even more ominous than he, track down his kidnapped daughter and trophy wife. Since the kidnapping of wife number one five years earlier ended in her death, Lane cautions Reacher that he will not brook police interference ("You break your word, I'll put your eyes out"). From Lane's quarters in the West Side's venerable Dakota apartment building to the shady sections of SoHo and Greenwich Village, the author's atmospheric descriptions make Manhattan a leading player, with menace lurking at every intersection. The inevitable showdown, on a farm outside a tiny English village, ranks as one of Child's most thrilling finales. (May)

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
The former Military Police, loner and larger than life guy, Jack Reacher, is back. This time he sits in a café in New York City where he becomes a witness without knowing. A day later he is hired to solve the kidnapping of the wife and stepdaughter of Edward Lane, ex-army officer and now the boss of a gang of private mercenaries. Even if Lane has the money to pay and the firepower to kill any kidnapper he has not the right guys to do the detective part of the job. Unfortunately the more Reacher finds out the more he feels that something about whole the case is completely wrong. And he starts to dislike Lane and his posse of Special Forces veterans. So he wonders why he wants to solve the case - for Lane, for the victims or for his own sake? What starts as a kidnapping in New York ends up in a deadly gunfight in the British countryside more than 3,000 miles away.

How could anybody not like Jack Reacher? Tall, strong, big, clever, invincible and independent. (This time Lee Child even put Reacher's CV on the first page!) Just the kind of guy you need when you got a problem. As always it is fun to see Reacher unravel tiny bits of evidence and draw conclusions out of minor details and seemingly unimportant or unrelated events. Therefore he comes to conclusions quicker than any other man alive.
Since as in real life most riddles and crimes take time to solve, the pace is (positively) agonizing slow. From the pace and Reacher's solid but slow process the book reminds me of "The Enemy" except there are a lot less dead ends during his investigation. In general the reader knows only as much as Reacher does - or less since he prefers to demonstrate his knowledge instead of simply telling it to anybody.
Unfortunately the conclusion behind the kidnapping is guessable long before the end. Also the quick and easy gunfight showdown is a bit disappointing since one could expect tougher resistance from highly trained man.

Even if this is not a page turner that will keep you glued to your seat it still is an enjoyable book, quite well written and a fast read. In comparison to Lee Child's last book "One Shot" the initial plot may not be as fascinating at first glance but on the other side the turn of events and the solution are a lot better, there are no unbelievable freakish bad guy characters and there are less flaws. Overall a clear vote for "The Hard Way".
For those not acquainted with the Jack Reacher character I would recommend to read "The Enemy" first and then read the rest of the books as they were published. But this is only to get to know the character better - it is not needed to understand or to enjoy this book.

Again this new book is not on the same level as Lee Child's best work ("Die Trying", "The Visitor"/"Running Blind", "Without Fail" or even "The Enemy"). But hey - if you already know and like Reacher then you cannot afford not to read this one anyway. And as usual I sure can hardly wait for the next Jack Reacher book to be released in paperback...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Reacher is back!, 18. Mai 2006
The last two Jack Reacher novels, while good, focused a little too much on procedural detail dispensing with some of the trademark action I love about this series. This time Mr. Childs has gotten back to his roots; engrossing action, evil bad guys, along with Reachers take no prisoners style! Jack won't back down from any man or any situation! A chance encounter with the menacing Edward Lane, an ex army officer, pulls Reacher into a new adventure. Jack Knows to be careful with this character, probably not get involved, but his curiosity (Along with the temptation of top pay) gets the best of him. Lane' wife and daughter have been kidnapped and he wants Reacher to find them but the police are not to be involved. Lane lost his first wife in a kidnapping incident (Hmmm?). Anyway, I won't ruin the surprises by giving away more but this is an action packed thrill ride that is NOT your typical kidnap story. I give it four stars, not the best Reacher, but in the top five. Oh yeah, for another action packed thriller you have to read "A Tourist in the Yucatan" I was not expecting much but it blew me away!
