Produktbeschreibungen

From Publishers Weekly

Fowler's fifth novel (after PEN/Faulkner award finalist Sister Noon) features her trademark sly wit, quirky characters and digressive storytelling, but with a difference: this one is book clubâ€"ready, complete with mock-serious "questions for discussion" posed by the characters themselves. The plot here is deceptively slim: five women and one enigmatic man meet on a monthly basis to discuss the novels of Jane Austen, one at a time. As they debate Marianne's marriage to Brandon and whether or not Charlotte Lucas is gay, they reveal nothing so much as their own "private Austen(s)": to Jocelyn, an unmarried "control freak," the author is the consummate matchmaker; to solitary Prudie, she's the supreme ironist; to the lesbian Allegra, she's the disingenuous defender of the social caste system, etc. The book club's conversation is variously astute, petty, obvious and funny, but no one stays with it: the characters nibble high-calorie desserts, sip margaritas and drift off into personal reveries. Like Austen, Fowler is a subversive wit and a wise observer of human interaction of all stripes ("All parents wanted an impossible life for their childrenâ€"happy beginning, happy middle, happy ending. No plot of any kind"). She's also an enthusiastic consumer of popular culture, offsetting the heady literary chat with references to Sex and the City, Linux and "a rug that many of us recognized from the Sundance catalog." Though the 21 pages of quotations from Austen's family, friends and critics seems excessive, the novelty of Fowler's package should attract significant numbers of book club members, not to mention the legions of Janeites craving good company and happy endings.

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Fowler, a captivating and good-hearted satirist, exuberantly pays homage to and matches wits with Jane Austen in her most pleasurable novel to date by portraying six irresistible Californians who meet once a month to discuss Austen's six novels. Coyly shifting points of view, Fowler subtly uses her characters' responses to Austen as entree into their poignant and often hilarious life stories. The book club is Jocelyn's idea, a fiftysomething gal who seems to prefer the company of her show dogs to men. She has known Sylvia since grade school, and even used to date Sylvia's husband, who has abruptly moved out, inspiring their beautiful, accident-prone, lesbian artist daughter, Allegra, to move back in and join the book club along with her mother. Also on board are disheveled and loquacious Bernadette; Prudie, a high-school French teacher; and Grigg, the only man. Fowler shares Austen's fascination with the power of stories, and explores the same timeless aspects of human behavior that Austen so masterfully dramatizes, while capturing with anthropological acuity and electrifying humor the oddities of our harried world. Fellow Austenites will love Fowler's fluency in the great novelist's work; every reader will relish Fowler's own ebullient comedy of manners, and who knows how many book clubs will be inspired by this charming paean to books and readers. 4.0 von 5 Sternen Interesting interweaving of 5 women and 1 one man, 23. März 2005
Diese Rezension stammt von: The Jane Austen Book Club (Taschenbuch)
Jocelyn sets up the Jane Austen Book Club to distract her best friend Sylvia from her husband's desertion. 3 more women and 1 man make up the club. Each time they meet to discuss one of Austen's books you also get an inside into the life of the host's life.

While this is certainly an enjoyable read and had me smiling several times at the beginning, I was left feeling that the potential of the set up had not fully been realized. I'd rather have seen a bit more work gone into the life chameos or in the book discussions than have the collection of Austen critic at the end of the book. Nonetheless it has made me want to pick up my Austen books and reread them with a view of the points made by the book's characters.

3.0 von 5 Sternen 6 character studies somewhat reflecting Jane Austens novels, 9. März 2005
Von Wombatsbooks - Alle meine Rezensionen ansehen

Diese Rezension stammt von: The Jane Austen Book Club. (Taschenbuch)
"The Jane Austen Book Club" started out great, but turned out to be nothing special. It was an good read, but I had expected a lot more. I wasn't disappointed because this book is most definitely *not* about Jane Austen's novels, but disappointed because this book is simply not unique.

Like Jane Austen published six novels, "The Jane Austen Book Club" has six members (Jocelyn, Sylvia, Allegra, Grigg, Bernadette and Prudie). While they meet monthly at one of the member's places to discuss Austen's novels, their lives are reflected. This book has six chapters, in each chapter there are tidbits of Austen hidden in between the character studies/bios of one of the club members.

"The Jane Austen Book Club" is a nice read: the characters are nicely drawn and the setting is quite charming, but I kept wondering which point I must have missed, to make this book special. I still don't know what it is ;-(. And there is another matter that still irks me: the story is told by a first-person-narrator. You never get to know who of the six members of the book club is the narrator and that spoiled the fun quite a bit for me. Hence only an average read ;-(.

Result: Give it a try, although I am still a bit ambivalent about it ;-)

3.0 von 5 Sternen Jane Austen Lite, 15. Dezember 2004
This book deserves five stars for its sincere attempt to honor Jane Austen's writing. At the same time, it deserves three stars for the effectiveness of its story and style.

The book has an interesting premise: "Each of us has a private Austen." The premise is explored by having five women and one man meet for a few occasions to discuss their favorite Austen novels. By choosing the novels they choose and what they have to say about them, the characters unintentionally reveal lots about themselves. At the same time, their private lives and loves move in mysterious ways to become harmonious. It's all very Austenish, if it's not very good Austen.

Joycelyn is the perpetual matchmaker, who never finds a match for herself. She thought of starting the Austen book club and recruited its members. Bernadette is an older woman who has moved past pretension and appreciates the humor in life. Grigg is a bachelor whose tastes usually run to science fiction and who has a little trouble fitting in with the women. Sylvia is Joycelyn's oldest friend, and her marriage has just broken up . . . despite Jocelyn having fixed Sylvia up with her husband, Daniel, who was Joycelyn's boy friend originally. Daniel has now flown to a new love. Allegra is the most spirited member of the group, and she's deep into her lesbian love life although not always clear about what's going on there. Allegra is Sylvia's daughter. Prudie is the most serious Austen student, and appreciates all aspects of her writing. Prudie is a high school French teacher who likes to share phrases a little too much and is the only person with an on-going marriage.

The book alternates between relating snatches of the book club meetings with looking into the personal relationships of the members. The book club snatches are a bit too brief for my taste and almost seem designed to avoid offending those who might not know anything about Austen.

If you haven't read everything that Jane Austen wrote, there's a brief set of notes on each novel discussed in this book starting on page 252.

The best part of the book's back materials comes though in quotes from Jane Austen's family and friends about her writing, and prominent writers since then. These sections are worth the price of the book alone! Very nice.

I enjoyed the book, but it fell below my expectations. I suspect the problem was that the book is too short to fully develop the characters, relationships and the book club interactions. You are expected to "fill in the gaps" without many dots to use. I found myself comparing this book to the non-fiction, Reading Lolita in Tehran, and found this book looking light in the comparison.
