A group of young boys, in uneasy partnership with an outcast girl, realize they must kill the creature before it devours them all. Simmons ( The Fall of Hyperion, LJ 3/15/90), winner of several prestigious awards for science fiction and horror (most recently a Hugo Award for Hyperion , Doubleday, 1989) ranks with the best the genre has to offer. In outline, this novel resembles Stephen King's It ( LJ 8/86). The children are well drawn and affecting in their bravery. This book should be in most horror fiction collections. BOMC alternate.

After reading the first couple of plodding Hyperion books I almost didn't bother with Summer. That would have been a terrible mistake. I have read this book so many times I am into my third(or fourth) copy. The story is rather standard horror, and handled by a lesser author (King?) would have been marginal at best. The characterization, and the "feel" elevate it beyond any other novel of its' type though. It takes me back to my youth and creates an atmosphere so strong it is almost impossible not to BE there and even tougher to come back. To explain the power of the prose is tough but I can see by the other reviews that it is pretty much a universal experience when reading this book. The only two bad points? Simmons seems to have peaked in his style with this book. Nothing else he has written even approaches the telling of this tale. Next would be the fact that this book is "hard to find" while most of the cookie cutter crap from King and Koontz sells like mad. If this story had Kings name on it it would have been one of the best sellers of all time. I hope they never make a movie of it because it would have to be three hours long, have a hundred million dollar budget, and they still would never capture the power of the prose which makes this story matter.

Ich habe mir "Summer of Night" gekauft, nachdem ich Simmons' "Terror" gelesen hatte und schlichtweg begeistert war. Auch in diesem Buch zeigt sich Dan Simmons als hervorragender Schriftsteller, das Grundthema - im noch heilen Amerika der Zeit vor Vietnam kämpft eine Gruppe von Jung-Teenagern aus der Provinz gegen das personifizierte Böse - wurde jedoch schon von Stephen King in seinem überaus bekannten Werk "It" verarbeitet. Nun würde ich "Summer of Night" nicht als bloßen Abklatsch von "It" bezeichnen, denn Simmons' Roman bietet durchaus auch eigene Ideen. Der Vergleich drängt sich aber aufgrund mancher Parallelen häufig auf, und Kings Geschichte schneidet meines Erachtens in diesem konkreten Fall besser ab: Sie ist auf ihre Art epischer, bietet besseres Zeitkolorit und ist von interessanteren Charakteren bevölkert, trotz Simmons' unbestrittener stilistischer Brillanz. Vielleicht kam mir "Summer of Night" auch deshalb nicht sehr originell vor, weshalb ich im Hinblick auf mein rein subjektives Lesevergnügen nur drei Sterne vergeben habe.

Fazit: Genre-Fans werden auf ihre Kosten kommen, aber die bis dato beste Geschichte dieser Art wurde von jemand anderem geschrieben.

Plot: Strange things happen in Elm Haven, a little rural town in the States. A bunch of children at the age of around twelve are among the only people who notice that something terrible is happening.
The first half of the book is about getting acquainted with the characters and their backgrounds and also about setting up the story. The horror effects are mostly subtle but nonetheless chilling. Often, the storyline is kept in the background while the reader is somewhat lulled by the sometimes very detailed descriptions of more or less everyday summer-vacation activities of the children, only to be taken by surprise by scary events. Its rather cunning of Simmons to let these things happen by night as well as in daylight.
The second half of the book starts with a poignant incident, wins more and more tempo and suspense and culminates in a action-loaded finale, although its a bit exaggerated in my opinion.

Style of writing: Dan Simmons has a very poetic and quaint style combined with humor, irony and also melancholy. You always have a very good picture of the whole scene, including all senses. It allows you to let the film wind off in your imagination and give you a sense of being right in the middle of the action. He is one of the quite few enormously gifted writers who can make a story enthralling by their style alone.

Characters: Simmons creates very profound, plausible and rich characters. They all have a different features and background which you get to know more or less deeply. They all evolve in their own way. Thus, they are very interesting to get acquainted with.
Furthermore, secondary characters are cunningly set in the story. Sometimes you only know them out of the childrens view (f.e. van Syke) which makes them very mysterious.
The thoughts and actions of the boys are sometimes too mature for their age. Without them, though, the story would never have attained this suspense.

Summary: A very felicitous horror novel, which will make you shiver and flinch many times over. Simmons succeeds in creating an atmosphere consisting of merriment, terror and curiosity at the same time.
A must for all horror fans and very recommendable for readers who like to get a glimpse of the top in the genre of fear and fright.
I rate this book with 4.5 points (rather than 4 as set above) because I am not very fond of the end the way it is constructed. But tastes differ (as they should) and therefore I only give a slight discount.
