Produktbeschreibungen

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. A truck jackknifes off an "arrow straight country road" near Kearney, Nebr., in Powers's ninth novel, becoming the catalyst for a painstakingly rendered minuet of self-reckoning. The accident puts the truck's 27-year-old driver, Mark Schluter, into a 14-day coma. When he emerges, he is stricken with Capgras syndrome: he's unable to match his visual and intellectual identifications with his emotional ones. He thinks his sister, Karin, isn't actually his sister—she's an imposter (the same goes for Mark's house). A shattered and worried Karin turns to Gerald Weber, an Oliver Sacks–like figure who writes bestsellers about neurological cases, but Gerald's inability to help Mark, and bad reviews of his latest book, cause him to wonder if he has become a "neurological opportunist." Then there are the mysteries of Mark's nurse's aide, Barbara Gillespie, who is secretive about her past and seems to be much more intelligent than she's willing to let on, and the meaning of a cryptic note left on Mark's nightstand the night he was hospitalized. MacArthur fellow Powers (Gold Bug Variations, etc.) masterfully charts the shifting dynamics of Karin's and Mark's relationship, and his prose—powerful, but not overbearing—brings a sorrowful energy to every page. From Booklist

Late one night, near the Platte River in Kearney, Nebraska, where the sandhill cranes pause every year in their spectacular migration, Mark Schluter flips his truck. Brain damaged, he develops Capgras syndrome, which makes him think that his sister, Karin, is an impostor. Despondent at Mark's constant requests to produce his "real" sister, Karin writes a letter to Gerald Weber, a cognitive neurologist whose case histories of bizarre brain disorders have best-selling appeal (think Oliver Sacks). Weber, who is suffering a very different kind of identity crisis himself, agrees to examine Mark. Powers has taken the primal question--"Who am I?"--and traced it to its chemical elements, exploring the ways the mind constructs smooth narratives out of messy reality. But his investigation is larger than the individual, leading him to explore how humans as a species smooth out the rough spots, tuning out the natural world, straying from the instincts that might keep us alive on our own long journey. Powers has complete command of storytelling skills, building questions of both plot and philosophy so deftly that, in their denouemont, there is no surprise, only recognition. A remarkable novel, from one of our greatest novelists, and a book that will change all who read it. Keir Graff

5.0 von 5 Sternen Simply brilliant!, 13. Februar 2008
Maybe the biggest strength of this book is how the author interweaves the various aspects of his rich, full story step by step without acting artificial. He begins with cranes, then describes an accident that leads to an exceptional brain damage of the driver, shows the reactions of the alerted sister, and bit by bit introduces us to today's all-American society. Powers writes about important current subjects: neurosciences, modernization, ecology, war on terror, and human relationships. As the story develops we learn more and more about the interrelations between the topics - not in a doctrinaire style but rather in an organic manner. His characters seem real and authentic; they may not act as heros but common people do hesitate in difficult, complex situations. Above all, Powers language is extraordinary - parts of the novel seem to derive from a poem. I'm not a great friend of poetry but I have to admit that the rhythm and melody of his words, especially when describing the cranes, are simply beautiful. Bottomline is: This is a fantastic and really impressive book!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Nonfiction Book About Brain Injuries and Consciousness Wrapped into a Fiction Format, 14. Mai 2008
It's hard for me to know who would like this book. It contains a great deal of information about how the brain works, consciousness is created, and the quirks of various mental disorders . . . but someone interested in those subjects would typically read a nonfiction book on the subject instead.

At the same time, those who like novels generally are looking for a story that moves through actions rather faster than the repeated ramblings in the characters' minds on the same subjects. With three narrators, you get to read about three sets of repetitive ramblings.

I must agree that I've never read a book quite like this, and I enjoy learning more about the latest in the neurosciences and how unusual conditions arise. Much of the book, however, reminded me of the paranoid ravings of a schizophrenic I knew once. Realizing the similarity to what a schizophrenic would say and do . . . and what the treatments are, I became skeptical about how accurate this book's fiction is for this particular brain injury.

There's some poetic material tying our common genetic heritages together between the human and animal worlds, but that's clearly secondary to the main messages.

I felt, too, that the book took too long to develop: Seemingly trying to make us suffer along with some of the characters by having to bear up with the problems for a long time.

I certainly agree with those who are impressed by the scope of the book's vision . . . I just don't agree with how well that vision was implemented. There are instances of fine writing in the book, but the overall plan didn't satisfy me as a way to communicate those points.

Unless you feel compelled to read this book because of the disagreements about it, I suggest you skip it.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Such a bore!, 1. Januar 2008
Diese Rezension stammt von: The Echo Maker (Taschenbuch)
The book was described as a "psychological thriller" on its back-cover and that's why I bought it in the first place.
Now I'm more than half way through and I'm losing interest with every page the lame story drags on.
There is so much wrong with this book that I don't know where to begin. First of all, it is more a case-study than a thriller, and the only character of interest is Mark, the accident-victim. All the other personae are so dull that - were they real - you would like to slap them hard just to get some kind of emotion/reaction from them.
As for the thriller - some leads and hints are dropped during the first 200 pages, alluding to a "big mystery behind it all", just to be totally ignored or forgotten for the next 200 pages (that's where I am now).
Normally I am a fast reader, and I finish every book I start, but this one will be the first to go to the paper bin unfinished - it's just not worth the time and bore reading it.
