"Like Tom Clancy on PCP." That's how Bruce Sterling describes his fin-de-siècle head trip, Zeitgeist, a typically Sterling spectacle packed with verbal flash and digerati wit, along with the expected rail-gun-steady stream of well-thought-out ideas and references. His self-appraisal, as it turns out, is right on. This is a guy widely considered "another, hipper Alvin Toppler" (in the words of cyberpunk godfather John Shirley), an effortlessly intelligent master of both style and substance.
Fans will recognize Zeitgeist's antihero protagonist Leggy Starlitz from Sterling stories "Hollywood Kremlin," "Are You for 86?" and "The Littlest Jackal." The well-connected, world-class fixer is part mystic, part sleaze--sort of Uncle Enzo meets Templeton "Faceman" Peck--and his latest hustle is plying the Third World with merchandise from his all-fake, all-girl band, G-7. (Its seven talentless, Wonderbra-wearing members are known simply as the American One, the French One, the German One, etc.)
Starlitz makes use of a shady, flamboyantly weird network of state officials, bodyguards, photographers, and other assorted players to push the merchandise--action figures, lip gloss, shoes, you name it--on what one of G-7's savvier members calls the "Moslem hillbillies." Abandoning the future in this bold, sprawling book, sf novelist Sterling reveals an equally fantastic present and brilliantly captures the moral and cultural climate of an end-of-millennium world full of twentieth-century detritus. The world is dominated by Western cultural influences, even in Islamic countries, and the "military-entertainment complex" has superceded the military-industrial complex. As Y2K approaches, Leggy Starlitz thinks he is about to pull off his greatest scam, "scouring the marginal, emergent markets with a Spice Girls copy band." The knock-off is G-7, a hit in places like Chechnya, Uzbekistan, and Turkey but virtually unheard of in the West. Starlitz oozes charisma and, though he isn't always on the level, is an endearing, unlikely hero. When his estranged prepubescent daughter shows up, he takes on the new role of father, ditches G-7, and undergoes a massive transformation that takes them across the planet before returning to his true calling. Sterling's cutting-edge knowledge of cultural movements, emerging and dead technologies, conspiracies, and tipping points makes Zeitgeist a powerful, poignant, and hilarious read as the twentieth century gives way to the new millennium. ... your side. Their side. The truth -- and what really happened.
Bruce Sterling totally gets this. Understanding the main concept of the book -- that there is no "truth" but only the major consensus narrative that you can believe in or not, but which will dictate what you, the media and everyone can get away with -- is required to understand the working of todays world.
The story is good. The characters are excellent. The ideas are brilliant.

glaubst du das das neue jahrtausend mit dem jahr 2000 angefangen hat? glaubst du der weihnachtsmann hatte schon immer einen roten mantel an? glaubst du die 1. mondlandung hat wirklich stattgefunden weil deine eltern dir davon erzählt haben das sie stattgefunden hat weil sie, genau wie 1mrd andere menschen, im fernsehen gesehen haben das sie stattgefunden hat? glaubst du die warheit ist das was wirklich passiert ist? wenn ja, ist es an der zeit sich dieses geniale buch vorzunehmen und noch einmal genau darüber nach zu denken. dieses buch verpackt sehr unterhaltsam verschiedene thesen und konzepte um die (ich leihe mir die worte aus) postmoderne popkultur und massenmedienlandschaft zu definieren.
eigentlich sollte zeitgeist schullektüre spätestens in der 10. klasse sein denn es verhilft einem sprichwörtlich dazu nicht etwa über seinen tellerrand hinaus zu schauen sondern den geschirrschrank von 1m entfernung zu betrachten und sich das nächste mal etwas weniger gutgläubig die 2000 tagesschau anzusehen.

A must read for everybody who wants to understand postmodern concepts of pop-reality. The author prooves, that he has read quite some hip french philosophers and can put their ideas into a thrilling story at the end of the last millenium. You want to know what Bin Laden and Milosevic have to do with Britney Spears, Michel Foucault and Gilles Deleuze, read this book and think different about Y2k ;-)
