Classic contemporary gay comics 20. Mai 2013
Von Mr. Mice Guy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
This volume reprints a selection of Oliver Frey's gay art, usually published under the pseudonym of Zack to differentiate it from his `mainstream' graphic work, for which he is equally well-known - see The Fantasy Art of Oliver Frey. The work presented here is primarily pin-ups, posters, magazine and book illustrations, etc., as opposed to his comic-strip work, which has already been collected by this publisher (see list below); although in the short biographical text piece, it is mentioned that a part-finished comic-strip remains from when `Meatman' comic anthology series ceased publication. Hopefully that might be reprinted one day in a successor volume to this, as despite the size and quality of this book, there is still a lot of Zack artwork out there.

The contents are _
P010: Boy Next Door
P028: Boys in Love
P044: Getting Wet
P060: Fantasy
P080: Heavy Intent
P122: Full On
P170: Over the Top
P196: An Art Amatorius (A biographical piece by Roger Kean)
P206: Covers, Adverts, Posters
P234: Afterword (by Francois Peneaud)

The above chapters are thematic collections of the artwork, ranging in scope from single figure images to double-page (and hard-core) crowd scenes, and until you have viewed one of Zack's crowd scenes, your imagination is in need of an upgrade to high definition wide-screen capability. The art is primarily in colour, though there are a number of monochrome or colour-wash images included, as Zack covered a wide field of illustration. Oliver Frey, in the Afterword, is compared to Frank Hampson and Frank Bellamy for influences on his design and composition, and he did in fact continue the famous Trigan Empire comic strip after the departure of Don Lawrence, who, along with Hampson and Bellamy forms the premier division of British comic strip artists of the 20th century (though none of them produced any gay - or straight - pornography, as far as I am aware). This is a superb collection of images by a superb artist.

A Rake's Progress 30. August 2012
Von Grady Harp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
For most people the name Zack is associated the quintessential male art and time is placing him I the echelon with Tom of Finland. But just as Touko Laaksonen took on the moniker of Tom of Finland and thereby landed his permanent place in the galleries of erotic art, so has Oliver Frey taken on the moniker of Zack and that seems to allow him to follow his extraordinary talents in a similar way. There is an excellent blog about Zack by John Coulthart that bears repeating: `It's inevitable when writing about gay art and artists that Oliver Frey's name will turn up eventually, so here's the requisite posting. Frey is often better known in gay circles under the nom de plume he used in the 1980s, "Zack", when he was a very prolific illustrator and comic artist for Britain's small number of gay mags. As Oliver Frey he was already well-known as an accomplished professional illustrator who was for a time an artist for Look and Learn`s long-running science fiction adventure strip The Trigan Empire. That professional work makes him probably the most widely-seen of all gay porn artists simply because he drew some Superman pages which are briefly seen at the beginning of the 1978 Superman. His career as a comic artist honed his skill at dealing with figures and telling a story which is one of the reasons his gay strips are still highly valued today. Those strips tend to be completely pornographic right from the start so I'll spare the delicate sensibilities of some of the readers here and link you to some collections of his Zack work instead. In the meantime, I'd love to know where the picture of the boy with the sword (above) comes from originally. It's a lot more finished than his Zack drawings and is paired on this page with a similar picture of serpent-twined tribal youths which hints at some kind of Burroughs-esque Wild Boys scenario. If anyone knows the answer, please leave a comment. As it is, it makes a good addition to the Men with swords archive, as does the piece of fluff below.'
And if the reader needs more background on this gifted artists/illustrator there is a fine, extended essay, complete with photographs, by Roger Kean in this book - entitled ZACK: An Art Amatorius. But words are words and images are images and this monograph contains more imagery over an extended period of time than any book preceding it. Zack is a gifted painter and this book selects some of his best work and treats them as the fine paintings they are. His ability to draw and to use color in both brilliant light and barely visible dark is a gift. Yes, this is erotic art and is basically aimed at a gay audience. But as art in and of itself it is especially excellent.

Zack is best known for his illustrated novels - comic book style tales of stories that involve adventure of the darker kind. But in this volume published in high quality standards by Bruno Gmünder Verlag is not story oriented: this is Zack's art as art - and it sets a very high standard. Grady Harp, August 12

Was hoping for more. More action male wise, but for what it is, it is always satisfying when there is an art/cartoon or what ever a person wants to call this type of book. Just to thumb through the book and have fun.

Only photo did not do interior justice 19. August 2013

The cover art indicated mature bodies in motion. I am an artist and use photos and drawings for inspiration. The content of this book had nothing to do with the cover, it is little more than kiddie porn. Instead of men, there was an over-abundance of teens and younger in hard core sexual poses. I am embarrassed to have this book in my house and am wondering how to get rid of it.
