4.0 von 5 Sternen Fachbuch als ebook ist gewöhnungsbedürftig 19. Februar 2013
Von ..
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf

3.0 von 5 Sternen Long on techniques, short on offering understanding 30. Juni 2012
Von Mitchell T. - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
A lot depends on your leaning style. This book is a compendium of lots of things you can do with the tool. It's of the often used style "use these settings, click this button, and look ... it is almost as complete as the picture in the book." (baseball hat for example) "Fool around with other settings till you get the hang of it."

If you want to understand underlying concepts, principals and reasoning in order to know something about the intentions of the tool's design and how one method might be more useful than another, this book doesn't shed much light on what is going on. Nor does it tell you how to make perfect UVs apparently so needed for Noisemaker. They are on the disc to save time.

Pixologic's own documentation is always a little opaque. It has gotten better with the new guide to 4R3, but the documentation expects you to want to know something based on the version release, rather than on what the numbers in the settings mean. (are they degrees, days to Christmas, or parsecs?) Too bad.

ZBrush is a moving target, as it evolves, new features supercede legacy methods, but after all, the users are "Artists dammit", and don't really need to understand the complexities of the zillions of parameters in the tool.

The company relies on experienced users like Michael Pavlovich (Eat3D DVDs or on Zclassroom, or Geert Melis, (his real tut is hidden on this book's DVD) to take you out with ZBrush and show you what this baby can do.

Since the author is lead application engineer for Pixologic, I had hoped for more of "what's under the hood" in the manner of Ryan Kingslien's work. Oh well, the "ZBrush Secret Decoder Ring" still awaits writing.

5.0 von 5 Sternen You will learn a lot about Zbrush, quickly. 23. Juni 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf

I am new to Zbrush. The more I use the program, the more questions I have. So I often stop my project and search for answers on line.
"Zbrush, Professional Tips + Techniques" is a great sources to answer my questions and teach me new techniques.
I browsed the book from cover to cover at first, and found so many interesting projects listed in the book. Right now, I am reading word by word and follow the instruction to do the projects. I am sure I will learn a great deals from these experts.
Mr. Paul Gaboury's writing is simple, clear and easy to follow. When I had a question, I sent an email to him. Within five hours, I received my answer. Like I have a personal trainer. How cool is it?
The CD included is helpful too. So do watch it.
Thank you Mr. Gaboury for the great book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent resource for all ZBrush artists 3. Oktober 2012
Von Steve Warner - Veröffentlicht auf
If you're reading this review, you're most likely (1) a ZBrush novice looking to hone your skills, (2) a ZBrush professional looking to shave time off your workflow, or (3) someone who has never used ZBrush but is interested becoming a digital sculptor. If you fall into any one of these categories, you should buy this book. And here's why.

The beauty of working as an artist for any length of time is that you begin to develop your own unique workflow. This is the nature of production. You're faced with challenges and are forced to come up with solutions. These solutions are inherently unique to your way of thinking. And because of this, they are often different than the solutions developed by other artists - even those working on the same problems. Sometimes your solutions are better (meaning they are faster, yield better results, etc.) than others. And sometimes they are not. It's easy to tell the difference. Just take note of whether you've been grinding your teeth. Or pulling your hair out. Or spending long hours only to achieve mediocre results. That's when you know your way of working isn't the best. And that's when a book like this becomes so valuable.

In ZBrush Professional Tips + Techniques, Paul Gaboury shares his extraordinary knowledge of ZBrush. And he has gathered some of the world's most talented ZBrush artists to share their unique techniques as well. Together, they share with you the solutions to many of the production challenges they've faced over the years. And in the process, Paul has created something extraordinary that transcends the typical tech manual.

The book is written for working ZBrush artists. Meaning that those who have been using the software for a while will find the most benefit from it. However this is the type of book that grows with you as an artist, and for this reason, it's an excellent resource for new users as well.

If you are a new user, you will find techniques in the first two chapters that will help you develop good working habits, gain mastery over the interface, and become a better sculptor. If you are an intermediate to advanced user, you will find a treasure trove of tips that will streamline your work and make you look like a rock star. This is a book that benefits from repeat readings, as you will undoubtedly find new value as your experience with the software grows.

The book contains contains 9 chapters, each dealing with a separate topic. Chapter 1 contains basic tips for new users. However don't overlook this because it says "basics." I've been using ZBrush since 2003 and was surprised to find several things I didn't know which I've now incorporated into my own workflow.

Chapter 2 and 3 cover sculpting and detailing techniques. It's worth noting that this is not a rehash of how to use ZBrush. The techniques shown here focus on the more esoteric tasks like working with Shadow Box, MatchMover and building realistic skin textures.

Chapter 4 covers hard-surface techniques and really shows how ZBrush can be used as a stand-alone modeling app. Chapter 5 covers texture painting tips and tricks. Chapter 6 talks about how to deal with scan data. Definitely a more advanced topic and one that you'll appreciate as a professional.

Chapter 7 covers posing and morph (blendshape) creation. Chapter 8 contains techniques on clothing and creating game-ready content. Chapter 9 focuses on lighting and rendering techniques.

Paul's knowledge and experience open each chapter, and he does a phenomenal job of providing practical techniques that you'll find valuable. The end of each chapter features "Artist Spotlights." These sections contain tips by the various industry professionals who contributed to the book. The combination of Paul's knowledge and the 18 contributing artists' knowledge makes this an extremely valuable book and one that you'll undoubtedly benefit from for years.

I'm a big fan of Tips & Tricks books. And this one is among the best I've found. It has become a well-worn and highly used part of my professional library. I highly recommend it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen excellent 31. Januar 2013
Von Travis Keller - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is excellent in that it works exactly as advertised. "Zbrush Professional Tips and Techniques" tops my 3 foot high stack of Zbrush books and is my go to guide for difficult modeling problem solutions. The writing style is direct, approachable and without pretense. Anyone actually serious about learning Zbrush which is both a both powerful, fantastic but yet sometimes not always intuitive should get this book right away. Paul Gaboury is proficient at presenting a clear and concise approach to mastering the Zbrush interface and achieving immediate and satisfying results. If I could squish this book along with Eric Keller's "Introducing ZBrush 3rd Edition" and Scott Spencer's "ZBrush Creature Design: Creating Dynamic Concept Imagery for Film and Games" into one volume I would have the ultimate Zbrush guide. But you don't have to you could just get all three on Amazon along with some glue or a stapler, and you know, go from there.
