Surely an author such as Dean Koontz can afford to relax? After all, every new offering from him always enjoys massive sales, so could it be time to rest on one’s laurels? It’s to Koontz’s credit that he chooses not to do that, and tries to ensure that each new book is subtly different from its predecessor (but not so different that it would alienate his considerable fan base). Your Heart Belongs To Me is close to being vintage Koontz (the title is not romantic, but a piece of macabre wordplay).
Ryan Perry, at 34, is a young man – hardly of an age to be on a waiting list, nervously hoping for a heart transplant. Luck appears to be with him: he is the recipient of a new heart, and (fortunately) the transplant takes, triumphantly. But a year passes, and Ryan begins to receive gifts in the shape of hearts, sent anonymously. A feeling of paranoia sets in – and this feeling is exacerbated when a large amount of money vanishes from his bank account – it has been donated to a local hospital’s cardiology department. Needless to say, all of this is a prelude to something truly horrific: everything he owns – including his new heart – is to be torn from him, and he is informed he will die a grisly death. Who is Ryan’s tormentor?
Readers of Koontz may not know the plot of Your Heart Belongs To Me (the author routinely comes up with fresh ones), but they’ll recognise that cold, unsettling vision that makes his books so grimly compelling. The story of the man who learns that his heart is failing and that all his money can't really save him is quite interesting and very well told. I really liked the long way from the first realisation of the problem to the transplantation and I certainly liked the slowly developing threat one year after. It was all masterly and believably told and I myself started to feel a little tension in my breast.
The conclusion and the "before-I-forget"-addition of dogs and handicapped children at the end then brought a book that until 40 pages to the end has been fabulously 5-star down to 2 1/2 stars. It seems that Mr. Koontz wrote himself into a corner here and didn't find a good way to get out of it again. Sad through this ending.

Der Klappentext klingt vielversprechend(Ich habe eine andere Ausgabe dieses Buches gelesen). Dort wird beschrieben, dass der Hauptproganist Ryan Perry ein Jahr nach seiner Herztransplantation plötzlich Nachrichten übermittelt bekommt, auf denen steht: "Your heart belongs to me".
Leider beginnt dieser "one year after his hear transplantation"-Teil erst auf Seite 220! Im ersten Teil des Buches werden nämlich genauestens seine Krankheit, seine Symptome und die Suche eines passendes Arztes beschrieben. Daher fand ich den ersten Teil des Buches eher langweilig, da ich mir - aufgrund des Klappentextes - gleich den Einstieg ins Buch nach seiner Herztransplantation erwartet habe. Ab Seite 220 beginnt dann das Buch erst spannend zu werden. Er findet Nachrichten, Süßigkeiten und andere Dinge in seinem eigentlich gut abgesicherten Haus, die darauf schließen lassen, dass er verfolgt und bedroht wird. Auf der Suche nach seinem Verfolger, muss er erfahren, dass seine Herztransplantation ethisch nicht ganz korrekt verlaufen ist.
Wie gesagt, aufgrund des Klappentextes hab ich mir vom Buch etwas anderes erwartet. Jedoch find ich das Thema und die damit verbundene Botschaft, die von der Geschichte vermittelt wird, sehr gut. Es regt auf jeden Fall zum Nachdenken an!

As we know the general thought is that when an author's name appears larger on a dustjacket than the book's title it is clear indication that the author has really arrived. Dean Koontz's name has been looming large on dust covers for sometime now and just the sight of it sells many a book.
For many audio edition afficionados the name Malcolm Hillgartner has much the same effect. He's a well trained actor who tackles a variety of genres with ease and competence. Those who heard his narrative of Koontz's Twilight Eyes well know why he was wanted for another reading by this author. Hillgartner held listeners spellbound as the plot perhaps a bit slowly but inexorably took us on a journey punctuated by evil.
Again there is an exploration of evil in Your Heart Belongs To Me. It's the story of one Ryan Perry, a man in his early thirties who has made a fortune thanks to the Internet. He has a great girlfriend, Samantha, a gorgeous California home. What he doesn't have is a healthy heart - he needs a transplant. Fortunately a suitable donor is found and the transplant is successful. However, there are those who give things away and then want them back as this tale of psychological terror reveals.
For this reader/listener this was not the best of Koontz. It was the best of Hillgartner.
