Penelope Leach's classic childcare manual - updated for 21st century parents In the 21st century we know a child's psychological development and well-being is just as important as any physical need. Here Penelope Leach brings together key new scientific evidence about the way infants think and react to their parents and the outside world. Find guidance on sleeping, feeding, playing and washing as well as stage-by-stage advice on your baby's physical, intellectual and emotional development from birth to five. You'll learn how to respond to your child and achieve a happier, more harmonious family life. More than a guide to childcare - this insight from Penelope Leach into your child's needs, thoughts and behaviours - will help you to really communicate together. You'll get support and learn to trust your parenting instincts and gain the confidence to live by your baby and child, not by the book.

Be assured from the start--this book is written by one of the world's leading experts in child development. Penelope Leach has worked with children and families for more than 20 years, researching such areas as antenatal education, birth practices, behavioural issues and child care. The guiding objective throughout her work is to bridge the gulf between theory and family reality--and in this she is second to none.

From page one you will feel completely immersed in her gentle and inspiring prose--she is authoritative without been didactic and her practical and reassuring explanations show real empathy to the feelings of parents. What's more, Leach writes from the child's point of view, making every aspect of care and each new stage reached, much more understandable and special.

The book is organised by approximate age-stages, starting off shortly before birth, up until the beginning of school life. Each stage gives advice and guidance on sleeping, feeding, playing and washing as well on the cognitive developments such as thinking and talking. There are "Parent's Ask" and "Parent's have their say" sections that discuss common anxieties and assuage misplaced fears or guilt and every chapter is wonderfully illustrated and structured, allowing you to dip easily into the appropriate section.

This book is more than a guide to child-care. It is an insight into your child's first years of life--their needs, thoughts and their behaviours--which will help you really communicate together. It is supportive without intruding in on your own parenting instincts and it will give you the confidence to live by your baby, not by the book. If you only buy one parenting guide, buy this. --Abi Frisby -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A book to be grateful for 28. Mai 2000
Von ltp1
This works like a bible. You can leave it on your shelf or by your bed, and pick it up from time to time, open it to somewhere, and find solace and wisdom. No matter where you start reading, you'll find you've read half a chapter before you know it, even when you only meant to look up one specific little thing. This woman writes like a charm.
I think it's a bonus if you've heard her speak, because you can hear her speaking what's written here, and her delivery is just wonderful. Quite erudite and thoroughly knowledgeable but not even a molecule of pretense. Reading this book gives you the utmost respect for its author, and makes you want to invite her over for lunch as well.
You'll pick it up and read, and then you'll go away from it and go about your busy life. You'll get lost again in diapers or laundry or the ins and outs of your baby's psyche. You'll get worn, or angry. At some point if you remember to dip into the book again, Penelope will remind you where the ground is and where your center is, and you will go be a good parent some more.
Penelope Leach is a Ph.D. psychologist -- she knows her child development. Throughout, she discusses WHY we should do X or Y as parents, and she explains the capacities and limitations of children at each age -- and their experiences, as well as can be known. This is a book absolutely grounded in the best of research. It's really an education in child development.
There are very few better, clearer, writers than Penelope Leach, either.
I imagine there are a lot of parents out there who are at least a little better than they would have been, as parents, for reading this book.
If you have the slightest chance, get it and read it. If you are even considering this as a gift to new parents, it'd be a terrific one.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Wordy but still good 11. Juni 1999
Though the work is too wordy, I have to thanks the writer for her research and caring advice. When reading the book, I had the feeling that I had my grandmum standing by my side and showing me how to take care of her little granddaugher. The book has an unique human touch which is absent in other works on baby care. My wife told me that when she was reading the chapter on breastfeeding she felt that she got a friend who truly understood the real-life difficulty in breastfeeding. The weakness of this book is that it is too wordy. With no disrespect to the writer I do think that the length of the book can be reduced by at least one third with no damage done to its contents. Comparing this book with the popular book by the American Academcy of Pediatrics (Caring for Your Bany and Young Child - Birth to Age 5), surprsingly I found the latter work by doctors more reader-friendly and easier to understand. This I believe highlight the major drawback in Penelope Leach's work - too wordy and not straight -to-the-point enough.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A must-read for all new parents. 30. Juni 2000
Von Anonymous
Penelope Leach has written a book that is easy to understand, realistic and practical in the advice that it offers. I still find myself going back to it for guidance with my second baby.
Dr. Leach writes beautifully and has a special knack for explaining things from a child's point of view. Also, the book only has pictures of "real" babies. Thus, they have a poignancy that would be lacking in staged photo shoots.
What I especially liked about this book are the hot topics of debate that appear throughout. Circumcision, a mother's anger at her baby, punishment and many other issues are presented. Sometimes the author takes a neutral stance and lets parents speak for themselves. At other times she makes it quite clear what she believes.
All in all, a very stimulating book. If you only buy one parenting book, this should be it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen First Baby? Get the book! 28. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
There is not a single book that tells you everything a nervous first time parent needs to know. This book however, comes close. I have not read it in a year and a half-- my son is almost 4. For that first year and a half, it was comforting to have. Ms. Leach answers the questions and gives a first time parent confidence in handling a baby or toddler, and as important, the confidence to know that not every child develops at the same speed. Get this book. You will use it and enjoy it. I liked to read ahead to see what my son would be doing in 6 months. Our generation wants a more detailed book than Dr. Spock, whom, you must also buy if you are stocking your bookshelf in preparation for your first child. I don't think you need this book if you kids are older than 3. Highly recommended!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fabulous reference material for parents! 24. Januar 1999
Von Ein Kunde
Ms. Leach has written a wonderful book to be used as a reference for new parents and seasoned parents alike. There is a very comprehensive index so you can easily locate the subject you are seeking information on. The book is divided into sections by age groups and it is extremely user friendly. I also used "What to Expect in the First Year" (another incredible must for every parent!) in conjunction with this book in my children's first year of life. Between the two books they certainly covered any questions I had from illnesses to scheduling to bathing from nursing or formula to friendships. I would highly recommend Ms. Leach's book and I am going to purchase a copy for my brother and sister-in-law who are expecting their first child in April. Enjoy!
