Synopsis
Animal-assisted therapy has become an accepted form of augmenting the healing processes that occur within the walls of healthcare facilities. The same joy and comfort animals provide at home can also benefit the eager patient or resident who awaits a visit from a volunteer and their pet. Photographer Renee Lamm Esordi accompanied volunteers and their pets on visits to hospitals, nursing homes, schools, a youth camp and special functions. She talked with healthcare staff, volunteers of various organisations, and many others about their experiences with these special visits. This documentation of these interactions illustrates the pleasure people can derive from the simple presence of animals. The photographs tell a story not only of alternative methods of healing but also of compassion, unconditional love, and comfort these visitors can bring.

The chapters feature animal-assisted therapy (AAT) organizations across the country with articles and interviews describing their procedures and mission followed by photographs of volunteer teams that visit people who could use a little company. A resources section is provided which lists the featured organizations and also national organizations offering information and education on AAT programs and procedures. You Have A Visitor is a unique documentary and useful reference for anyone interested in helping others by volunteering with their family or personal pet. Highly recommended.
