Familiar to many for their excellent "Handbook" travel guide series, Moon Publications (Road Trip U.S.A., LJ 10/15/96) does not disappoint even the seasoned visitor to New York with travel writer Bird's offbeat guide to the city. Information is arranged geographically (East Village, Upper West Side, Lower Manhattan, etc.), making it easy to use. The author focuses on interesting sights, such as James Dean's apartment and Andy Warhol's Factory, and recommends cheap to expensive hotels and eating establishments. In the back of the book, she divides selected New York City restaurants by type of food and New York City museums according to interest; there is also a section on Manhattan shopping. Interspersed with the travel information are short, informative pieces on the city's quirks, such as the "Fine Art of Jaywalking," "John Jacob Astor," and "Cockroaches."
