*Starred Review* Like Haruki Murakami in Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (1991), Chabon plays with the conventions of the Chandlerian private-eye novel, but that's only one ingredient in an epic-scale alternate-history saga of Jewish life since World War II. The premise draws on an obscure historical fact: FDR once proposed that Alaska, not Israel, become the homeland for Jews after the war. In Chabon's telling, that's exactly what happened, except, inevitably, it hasn't gone as planned: the U.S. government now has enacted a policy that will evict all Jews without proper papers from Sitka, the center of Jewish Alaska. In the midst of this nightmare, browbeaten police detective Meyer Landsman investigates the murder of a heroin-addicted chess prodigy who happens to be the disgraced son of Sitka's most powerful rabbi. No one wants this case solved, from Landsman's boss (his ex-wife, Bina) to the FBI, but our Yiddish Marlowe keeps digging, uncovering apocalypse in the making. Chabon manipulates his bulging plot masterfully, but what makes the novel soar is its humor and humanity. Even without grasping all the Yiddish wordplay that seasons the delectable prose, readers will fall headlong into the alternate universe of Chabon's Sitka, where black humor is a kind of antifreeze necessary to support life. And when Meyer, in the end, must "weigh the fates of the Jews, of the Arabs, of the whole unblessed and homeless planet" against a promise made to a grieving mother, it's clear that this parallel world smells a lot like home. Chabon's Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay ran the book-award table in 2000, and this one just may be its equal. Bill Ott

The fanciful Sitka of The Yiddish Policemen s Union plays the delicate, infinitely complex game of fiction fairly: this place is so vividly imagined you practically need a parka and a prayer shawl to get from one page to the next, but it s also blatantly impossible, and that s its saving grace. It s a welcoming homeland for imaginary people which is all fiction is, anyway. But this novel slowly, movingly allows at least a couple of its imaginary denizens, Landsman and his tough ex-wife... to become real to themselves, to find a story they can live in without feeling imprisoned or cosmically cheated...Nice novel. Seldom will you have an opportunity to read a book that offers so much fine writing, imaginative fancy dropped in lightly to expand your mind, wit, and examples of how we are our own worst enemy by assuming we know what's going on rather than getting the facts. If you are Jewish and know Yiddish, you'll have the extra benefit of many good-humored, self-directed jokes: In places, you'll think you've stepped into a Neil Simon comedy. And there are lots of nods to fine literature throughout the book to keep the serious reader entertained.
To give this book a conventional book review does Mr. Chabon a disservice. How can I best summarize The Yiddish Policemen's Union? Expect the wildly unexpected.
Most novels try to fit tightly into a genre. By following certain conventions, readers have an easier time following what's going on and are soon basking in reflected pleasure from other books they've read in the genre. If you mash together genres instead as Mr. Chabon has done, the results can be chaotic, humorous, and revealing about the flaws in the genres. This book combines so many genres that you'll probably find yourself losing track of how many are referenced in one place or other.
The Yiddish Policemen's Union isn't one of those books that you should read quickly. You should savor each conversational exchange, each scene, and each historical, social, cultural or biblical reference as you might savor a fine wine. Sip slowly, stop, and experience as many flavors as you can.
I have two warnings however.
If you are looking for a book that's exactly like The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, you've been misinformed. The same author is involved, but the two books are quite different.
If you think you are going to read a conventional murder mystery-police procedural, you've set your sights in the wrong direction. Yes, there are crimes, investigations, and mysteries, but they aren't the heart of the book's appeal. If you apply only that lens, you'll probably complain that the second half of the book doesn't work very well. Putting together all those genres means that the murder mystery-police procedural aspect cannot proceed as smoothly as you are accustomed to experiencing.
To me, the book's greatest feature is the variety of ways that Mr. Chabon communicates his ultimate message that redemption is available for us all . . . if we simply get busy and seek redemption.
Enjoy a great read!

An old-school detective story set in the utopian Jewish state Sitka in Alaska is not only suspenseful and enchaining but it also offers some food for thought about religious fundamentalism - and a love story with some kind of happy ending.
The well elaborated main characters, phobic Meyer Landsmann with alcohol problems and his half-Indian cousin Berko Shemets, both detectives of the homicide devision, become more and more entangled in political and religious machinations. Chess plays an important role in the development of the plot and the characters as well as in the search for the murderer.
I loved to read this book and enjoyed every page of it - but beware! The book is only recommendable for advanced learners of English most and for all because the author uses a lot of Yiddish and made up words.

This book is an unlikely but fascinating combination: First it appears to be just a crime story in a Chandler-like dark and desolate setting of a Jewish settlement in Alaska on the verge of being repossessed by the United States which will leave its inhabitants out in the cold. The main character is a burnt out quixotic policeman who starts an unwanted murder investigation while struggling with his own alcoholism, some dangerous and colorful adversaries and his ex wife who is now his superior. On second look the author manages to slip some major philosophical observations into the fast paced story: It seems to be quite possible to reconcile strict adherence to religious practices with a life of crime and utter brutality. How does this connection work? The reader learns a lot while being hugely entertained. The book is great, excellently written, a must for anybody who appreciates a good story which far transcends the usual scheme of tough cop -hard life - brutal action -justice prevails.
