This CD is a musical joy, the arrangements are played and sung with heart, and the atmosphere is convincing. The recording is performed by opera singers and a virtuosic pianist - this means it is performed in a rather classical fashion, not klezmerised, jazzified or pretending to be folk-ethnic. Rather it is similar to what DeFalla, Copland and Bartok did with folk songs from their respective countries. The authenticity stems from the Yiddish and Ladino speaking artists, the manner may be a bit romantic and opulent for those searching for a simple folk song recording, or those who would like a recording to 'sing along to'; this is a live recording, from a live concert (you can only tell though by the applause) from the Stuttgart Opera. The Yiddish songs are mostly known standards. Many of the Ladino songs are discoveries and show the many genres of the repertoire, 'El Dio Alto' and 'Como La Rosa' are discoveries for me, the songs show how early spanish music developed into the spanish music we know today - it is difficult to believe that these melodies stem from the 14th century. Helene Schneidermann could be a mix between von Stade and Christa Ludwig, she sings most of the more perky, virtuosic and humorous numbers, while Motti Kaston performes the sustained and dramatic songs with a voice which brings Ernest Blanc to mind. The accompaniment veers from a mysterious-Keith-Jarret patter to a guitar like rhythmic fandango.

This is a special collection bringing both ends of Jewish Folkmusic together, Yiddish and Ladino. The Yiddish songs are more well known, are presented here in authentic and moving renditions. The Ladino songs prove to be a deep link into the world of ancient Spain. Both singers are fantastic, the playing great. One doesn't need to have the Klezmer clarinet or ancient music ensembles to get to the heart of these songs, which are accompanied by piano. All three artists give a comfortable and easy - almost jazzy - impression.
