Although the Pointer Sisters had a couple of brief bursts of success here in the UK, they are second to only the Supremes in the USA in the most successful girl group battle, thanks to nearly forty entries on the US Pop and R&B charts between 1973 and 1991. However, Anita, Bonnie, June and Ruth were more than a mere girl group. One of the most eclectic groups on record, the Pointers have written and recorded Pop, Funk, Traditional Jazz, Soul and Heavy Rock without ever stepping out of their depth. They even won a grammy for best Country single by a duo or group in 1975 with a number called Fairytale, written by Anita and Bonnie. That same year they topped the US R&B chart with another self-penned track called How Long (Betcha Got A Chick On The Side), which served as a template for many of today's Rap/R&B hybrids. These tracks are available on this truly essential collection. Bonnie Pointer's reading of the classic Black Coffee (normally associated with Sarah Vaughan) is quite frankly spine chilling. The funk numbers such as their debut US hit Yes We Can Can, their cover of Allen Toussaint's Going Down Slowly and the UK two-step classic Don't It Drive You Crazy show why the Pointer Sisters are one of the greatest R&B groups of all time. It's just that their was a lot more to them than that. Their string of 80's pop hits attests to this. Those hits are available elsewhere. This CD covers their recordings released on Tommy LiPuma's Blue Thumb label between 1973 and 1977. The funky You Gotta Believe that they performed in the Car Wash movie is also here.
