5.0 von 5 Sternen Sehr fundierte Lektüre 18. Mai 2014

5.0 von 5 Sternen Perfect for how I learn - check the author's forum for errata to save yourself from frustration though 21. November 2013

This book is just right for the way I learn. I can't promise that is the same way you learn but, for me, it works. I have tried to learn the combination of Objective C and Xcode several times and failed. It seems so much more complex than other IDEs and languages I've used successfully. The key is learning and practicing enough to actually remember it and this book does a nice job of talking about how things work, what goes with what and then making you put the concept to work in code. Don't download the code from the website. Type it yourself and think about what you are doing and you'll learn more.

One caveat, there are a couple errors in the code and instructions in the book. You can read about these and the corrections to them in a forum the author maintains (there's a link on the website the book mentions). On one hand, you learn a lot trying to fix these yourself but, on the other, you can go crazy trying to understand why it isn't working when you did exactly what the book said to do. You might want to check the forum to know where the errors are before you encounter them. Then, if you want to try to fix them before reading the details of the fix, just ignore the rest of the forum post until you try fixing it yourself.

Overall the book is really great. The number of errors is small but they can throw your learning a curveball if you don't know there's an error.

4.0 von 5 Sternen don't judge the book by its cover 24. November 2013

Judging by the low price and cheap cover art, I was expecting this to be a dodgy self-published work of dubious quality. I bought it anyway because its one of the first books I've seen on Xcode 5. I've got several others on this topic but they're all for old versions of Xcode and contain lots of pre-ARC memory management code (and they fail for other reasons, I won't go into here).

I was pleasantly surprised by what I got. I picked up lots of tips that had passed me by in the other books, and cleared up some confusions about differences in Xcode 5. The author's style is also refreshing. He gets the balance between theory and practice just about right for my skill level.

As for skill level, you will need some familiarity with Objective-C and programming concepts before you take on this book. You don't need to be an expert (I'm not), but if you've never done any programming before this is not the book to get you started. Look at Steve Kochan's Objective-C book for that, and then maybe move on to Hillegaas and this for Xcode.

Excellent book. I'm on chapter 5 and the author is very clear and this book really helps you learn how to program in Mavericks. I'm looking forward to updating this review when I actually finish the book. Covers using the latest edition of Xcode. So far so good! I'm at chapter 9 now: What is cool is that even if you might forget to add something, because the author explained how exactly to add properties, methods actions and how to make the connections to your app, you know and have confidence exactly how to resolve the issues. The apps that are being developed really utilize the controls that you would expect to use in an application.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Xcode Primer 1. Mai 2014
Von Roark Dority - Veröffentlicht auf
I had to search far and wide for this book but it was worth every penny. One of the best programming books around. I think Apple's strange programming language is a pain in the butt. Nick Smith helped me so much, after reading his book, I can say with confidence that I'll be writing decent applications for the Mac and can start doing so now.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Simple Build, Test, Enhance Approach 31. März 2014
Von Michael W. Sprouse - Veröffentlicht auf

XCode Primer takes the approach of rapidly taking the user through the basics of programming in XCode 5.0. The author skips a lot of deep diving about topics, and instead focus’ the user on getting to know and work within the XCode work environment. The author teaches you the basics of the work environment, which is not unusual, but then shows you how to use the debugger by added some very basic items to our simple test code. This is a very helpful step that a lot of other XCode books tend to gloss over and pays big dividends later.

Once you have created a very simple application with debug capabilities built in, the author quickly shows you other simple and useful methods to control the application while executing. Each enhancement is quickly added, built, and then tested to demonstrate the change. In this way, your application never gets too unwieldy and prone to bugs. You are simple tweaking your main application with a lot of emphasis on building and testing at each step of the way.

From your simple application, the learning really picks up be adding items every application needs such as Buttons, Labels, Actions, Outlets, Indicators, and Table Views. You basic application grows in sophistication as you start to understand the main features of XCode 5.0.

This is great book if you what to pick up XCode programming quickly.
