Written on The Body is a tender dissection of erotic love. The prose is like a poem, lush with wit and imagery, but behind the luxuriant relish of the words, there is a scalpel-sharp cut of emotions. Love and longing are the wounds through which Winterson's imagery flows. The novel begins with regret: "Why is the measure of love loss? It hasn't rained in three months ... The grapes have withered on the vine." The narrator is also suffering from a heart-stricken drought. She is grieving for the loss of her true love, Louise.
Louise has flowing Pre-Raphaelite hair, and a body besieged by leukaemia, her cells waging war: "here they come, hurtling through the bloodstream trying to pick a fight." But Louise is not dead, merely abandoned by the narrator with the best of intentions. As the lament continues, striking in its beauty and dazzling inventiveness, more of the love story is revealed. The narrator has been a female Lothario, falling in love, and out again, swaggering like Mercutio. But then she meets Louise, married to Elgin--"very eminent, very dull, very rich"--and is hopelessly, helplessly smitten: "I didn't only want Louise's flesh, I wanted her bones, her blood, her tissues, the sinews that bound her together." Elgin persuades her to leave for the good of Louise's health, and all is undone.
Winterson does not shy away from grief, or joy. She has acutely described how love can transform a life, but also destroy it too. But, for Winterson, where there is love there is hope: "I stretch out my hand and reach the corners of the world ... I don't know if this is a happy ending but here we are let loose in open fields." Like Andre Breton's dizzying poem, "Ma Femme a la chevelure de feu de bois" ("my woman with her belly like the unfolding fan of days/... My woman with her swan's back buttocks"), the narrator of Winterson's ( Sexing the Cherry , LJ 2/15/90) new novel relentlessly celebrates the beauty of a beloved woman's body--but the trick here is that we do not know whether the narrator is a man or a woman. The story is minimal and not altogether original: a corrusive sensualist experiences many women but finally becomes obsessed with one, stealing her from her husband, only to discover that she has been guarding a terrible secret: she is threatened by a terminal illness. The fascination is the lush, plush language and the way two aspects of the physical--passion and bodily decay--are delicately interwoven. Not to everyone's taste, but serious readers and sensualists will enjoy. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 10/1/92.

I think this is the best novel I have read so far by Winterson, and I am not missing that many anymore. The typical almost asexual narrator being in love, telling a compelling love story that follows disillusionment about love. It's very rich, deep, touching, wonderful and wise.

This book was my introduction to Jeanette Winterson. How absurd that I should try to use words, which live to serve her and at best tentatively pacify and at worst frustrate and taunt me, to try to describe her writing. I have not before nor since read an author with such an ability to capture in words the actual feeling of love so completely, with the realism of Rebecca Brown and the passion of Terry Wolverton, surpassing both with her amazing style of phrasing that brings you deep into the supreme joys as well as the excruciating pains of love. I have read it repeatedly, and given several copies as gifts.

Reading her cronological means that this is her first novel without fairies. It's the first novel hiding the gender of the narrator. (Although there is one hint that it might be female). A book with a mistake, maybe: If the narrator really is vegetarian, why does he/ she eat the rabbit?
Nothing in this book is clear, only one thing: That love is nothing, and love is everything, and that humans, or the narrator only?, don't change, cannot change, dare not change.
It's a sad book, a deep book, there is nothing more to say about it. Maybe it's her best one so far.
