After having read about, studied, and listened to African music, I thought I had developed a pretty decent understanding of the music. But having never actually played or danced, I knew I was still missing something. As it turns out, I was missing quite a lot! I bought this book to get an idea of how the music is played, and learn a little about dancing, but never expected it to be this much fun, easy, and informative! Just popped the DVD in, and I was sucked in! It's almost impossible to watch without wanting to get up and dance along!
West African Drum & Dance teaches the music the way it's supposed to be taught, through understanding the culture, as will as the art. With the DVD, it's simple, easy, and fun to jump right in. Getting to learn the rhythms, the drums, the dance, and even the music and language, all help to give a full, well rounded view of African art and culture. You feel as if you've gotten to visit and get to know a little about life in this African village, and your appreciation for the music and people will be exponentially deepened.
In addition to wanting to learn myself, I had hopes of maybe getting ideas on how to adapt some of the musical and rhythmic ideas to my own music and in my private guitar lesson studio. I certainly have, but in addition, I'm now considering learning more and teaching actual African drum and dance! There are so many great things any teacher or student of music, dance, or culture can learn from this, I'm certain you'll want to share it as well, once you've gotten into it!
I had no idea how much fun and how accessible learning these rhythms and dances would be! And it's suitable for virtually all ages, from elementary to oldest adult! Highly recommended to lovers of culture, music, dance, and life!
