Mehr über den Autor

Hello. Thank you for being interested in my work. I had a lot of fun creating it and am now having a lot of fun sharing it.

I guess you could say I came to doing art work by the back door. My formal schooling was in the area of clinical psychology . . . Bradley University, B.S. 1965 and M.A. 1969. But even as a child I wanted to grow up to be a jeweler. I was always fascinated by pretty stones. I would pry them out of old pieces of costume jewelry and squirrel them away in a small, fuzzy, green velvet box lined with cotton and have fantasies about whether or not they were real.

I was a stay-at-home mom when we lived in Chicago's Hyde Park district so I had a lot of time on my hands. I started buying and studying jewelry design books and set up a small studio in the sun room of our apartment and showed my wares at street festivals. The University of Chicago offered a class in welding so my friend, Annie Kleboe, and I decided to sign up. Annie was doing stone sculpture at the time; she's now into collages.

We moved to Arizona in 1975. I wanted to learn casting and was very fortunate to find excellent instructors. Bob and Gina Winston were veteran designers selling out of a gallery in California but their studio where they held classes was only ten minutes from my house. I truly lucked out. I stayed with them for five years. (Handcrafted Jewelry Photo Gallery, Handcrafted Jewelry Step by Step, Wire Jewelry Photo Gallery, Sell Your Work)

Also, during this same time period, I wanted to learn how to cut gem stones . . . another excellent instructor was fortunately available. Martin Koning, a cutter whose skills were respected internationally, had his shop right off the highway near Wickenburg, Az. He agreed to teach me.

Wickenburg was a two hour drive from my house. Every Saturday for two years my husband would take care of the kids to give me a day off. I'd leave my house at six a.m. to be at Martin's by 8 and usually not get home until dinner. It was a beautiful drive; I absolutely loved it.

My other crafts include woodworking and sewing (quilt design and construction). I owe whatever sewing skills I have to my mother. She was very patient with me. Sometimes I'd get so frustrated at not being able to do it I'd be ready to quit. But she sat with me and she showed me and finally I'd settle down and try again. Another skill this taught me was how to follow directions. (Creations in Wood Photo Gallery, Bargello Quilts Photo Gallery, Bargello Train Quilt Cutting and Sewing Instructions)

I mainly enjoyed cutting out the patterns and seeing how much material would be left over from what the pattern recommended we buy. Sewing the pieces together was just another kind of puzzle and it taught me how to visualize and think things through so I could end up with something that was half-way decent looking.

Woodworking is still another kind of puzzle only in order to put this puzzle together, you first have to design and make the pieces. It's fun. I definitely recommend any kind of craft as a worthwhile pastime and learning experience.

My professional writing career began in 1980 with the publication of Jean's Arizona Fan Palm, cutting directions for a 3.2 carat citrine (you can see it in the Handcrafted Jewelry Photo Gallery book in this Kick-Start Creativity series), in the January issue of the Lapidary Journal Gem Cutting Magazine. Many years later I was submitting step-by-step articles for original jewelry designs to various international magazines.

And now, 2012, I'm enjoying the writing and publishing of various kinds of books for Kindle. (How To Eat Healthy - foods to eat...foods to avoid, No Work Vegetable Gardening, Psychology of Success - how to have success when trying to change how you look, The Trust - a cautionary tale, Little Mysteries - a short story)

I'll be 70 years old this year. It's been quite a ride. I hope you enjoy my offerings.

Again, thank you for your interest.

Joyce Zborower

About the Author Living in a second floor apartment in Chicago was okay for raising herbs and flowers on the window sill, but Joyce wanted a vegetable garden outdoors in the sunshine where she could grow tomatoes and potatoes and squash and beans. After moving to Arizona, she was able to plant a small garden in the back yard of her rented house but the organic gardening books she had at the time recommended tilling and weeding and etc., etc. She thought there must be a better way. There was. After extensive searching and reading, she found what she was looking for … a method of planting and growing veggies with a minimum of work and a maximum of pleasure. And, in No Work Vegetable Gardening she’s sharing what she found with you.

I have wanted to know how to have a simple vegetable garden but every time I try it all gets too hard. I love the simplicity of this book and the fact that it has all the information I need in the one place. The author gleans the best tips from various sources and also includes further reading sources if you wanted to go into the concepts more deeply.

I love the "lasagne gardening" approach and have decided to try it in a raised garden bed (which it had some good ideas for too). I have dabbled with square foot gardening before with not much success but found a tip that showed me where i was going wrong.

If you need a helping hand with simple, old fashioned, organic gardening, this is a great place to start.
I Found This Book To Be Very Informative and Very Helpful 11. August 2014

I've been interested in improving the quality of the food I eat and my interest in gardening has grown immensely. I was fortunate to find "No Work Urban Front Yard Vegetable Gardening: The Easiest Way To Get Fresh Tasty Veggies For Your Whole Family" to get me started on my gardening journey.

Joyce Zborower starts off with a brief history of agricultural techniques. I found the content engaging as well as informative. This chapter laid the groundwork for by succinctly explaining, "how we started" and "where we are today".

I found Joyce's investigations of a variety of potting soils to be particularly interesting. Joyce really opened my eyes and made me aware that all potting soils are not created equal. She even discovered and shared that some potting soils don't list all their ingredients on the bag!

The chapter on making your garden bed was detailed in an easy-to-follow, step-by-step fashion. This chapter is followed up with a chapter on planting your garden after you bed is complete. Joyce covers "square foot" gardening and illustrates and explains how to do this in her familiar easy-to-follow, but thoroughly-detailed style.

This book is packed with great information that should be able to get anyone started growing their own tasty veggies.

This book inspired me to start an organic garden. Joyce Zborower lays out very simple and easy to follow directions to starting a garden. I like the idea of a raised garden. Also intrigued by the garden squares. The book has everything from start to finish on how to easily get on my way to raising my own vegetables. Great book! Highly recommend!
What? A Vegetable Garden In My Front Yard. You Are Kidding! 9. Juli 2014

What great timing for this book. Vegetables prices are climbing. The veggies don't look the best unless you buy the expensive organically grown produce. My interest in Paleo foods which insists on natural grown meats and vegetables was peaked when I saw this little book. I had visions of the perfect vegetable garden appearing in my front yard. She said No Work... but the Genii failed to appear so I knew there was work involved. It is true but this author shares the easiest way do do this exciting adventure.

The author explains the hardest part of that Front Garden is to build and plant a simple organic gardening bed you can put almost anywhere in your yard. I like her idea to raise the bed so I will not have to bend over. With this bed in place everything is easy (almost). She shows how to start your garden and gives you the tips and ins and outs of being able to walk into your front yard and pick dinner.

Lots of full color pictures. With this guide and a little work you are on your way to good health. Stay Healthy. Recommended!

This is a nice summary of several other gardening books. I love gardening. Since I started gardening just over five years ago I have read several books. This book would have saved me so much time because it provides a nice summary of most of the books I read. If you are new to gardening and would like a summary of several popular methods, then this is the book for you.
