5.0 von 5 Sternen A #1 Book on my list 22. August 1998
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Taschenbuch
I have always enjoyed reading different novels, but Anne Rice has recently become my favorite author. The Witching Hour was the first book of hers that I read. Once you start to read her books, the characters worlds become so real and wonderful that you don't want to put the book down. Most of the time I didn't. I believe that I read that book in 3 months time. What makes her books so wonderful, is that she starts the novel with something that will grab your attention. Towards the middle of the book she gets into detail so much about the family that it feels like you've been there watching all this happen. She tells the tradgedy and the joys that the family faced and how they overcame them that you feel happy when they were happy and sad while they were. Anne Rice can take a simple supernatural idea and weave it into a beatifully written story that you'll want to read again(regardless of the lenghth!). I also recommend The Vampire Chronicles and The Mummy or Ramses the Damned. They were also both great books.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Rice at her best! 14. März 2003
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I loved the Vampires (at least up to Body Thief) and adored the Mummy, but I think Witching Hour is her best. The HUGE book is absolutely compelling from beginning to end. The Book moves from Modern day story of a young woman, the end product of centuries of witches that are under control of "the Man" called Lasher( because he could make the trees lash when he was angry) into the past of her ancestors. Each generation of the "Mayfair Witches" there was a chosen female that 'inherited' the man, and he brought power, he brought madness.

The book leisurely details the woman's modern day life, returning to New Orleans for the funeral of her mother, the base of the family of witches male and female, and comes to terms with her heritage, Lasher and a destiny plotted for her leading to a horrific coming: bring Lasher into this world. We see a lot of the tale through the eyes of the people around this family, as the agent for the Talamasca (seen in the Vampire Cycle), the watchers and recorders of witches and vampires, collect the tales on the family.

It is a leisurely paced book, that brings one into mind of New Orleans' slower pace, but it's spellbinding, haunting, deceptively mesmerising. When she moves the tale of the Mayfair witches into the past and traces each generation of witch from early Scotland on, she is breathtaking. Rice uses ancient Scots lore and gives it a new life in her evocative, provoking tale that will keep you hypnotised as few works do.

Don't think she was better before or since. It's simply a master piece. Followed up with Lasher, Taltos and Merrick.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A long worthwhile read 22. Juni 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
This is probably not a book for everyone, as it is long in detail and long on developing the plot. If you love novels like these, you will love this.If not, do not even pick this up.

The story of the Mayfair witches starts in the present, moves to the past and back to the present with some loops thrown in.

Anne Rice made beautiful usage of the language and description. I felt half the time that I was there in New Orleans (and it being over 90 degrees here helped =) watching a ghost story unfold.

The ending is definitely a shocker, however, if you take the time to read the second and third book it all makes sense. This was not written to be a one book novel.

Anne spent a lot of time developing the characters in this novel, which explained why certain characters do and react the way they do. It also made me feel that I knew each individual character very well. I almost cried at points, and got very angry in others.

To me it was well worth the read (it grabbed my attention immediately, I didn't put it down for 2 days thank god it was the weekend!) and then I had to run out and by the next two books, which I will not go into details on here.

1.0 von 5 Sternen I recommend this book only to my enemies 28. Mai 2000
Format:Taschenbuch
Over the years I have read many novels and as time passes I only come to remember the very good and the very bad, the rest sliding away into the sleepy land of mediocrity. Let me say that I will always, always, remember the Witching Hour and only for the wrong reasons. I suppose I could write a thorough essay on the technical reasons why this book is flawed. However, having already sacrificed on an extremely bloody alter so much of my time on this lengthy story, I will edit myself in a way Anne Rice obviously never was and keep myself pointed. This book is boring. After a few hundred pages of character development one wonders if Anne Rice is simply trying to torture you. Then a few hundred more pages pass, the end starts coming, all the character traits simply vanish in what must be 900 pages of character resolution in the last fifty pages, the story crumbles, and you are left with nothing more than tendinitis from holding the book up so long. Oh yeah, you are also left with anger. As for some other reviews claiming that Rice's style is wonderful, my reply is that if somebody spends nine hundred pages describing a sloth crossing a concrete room in the most poetic manner possible, I still do not have to like it. Please don't read this book.

1.0 von 5 Sternen hated it 19. Mai 2000
Von Ein Kunde
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Liked the first hundred pages. Then the book became extremely repetitive. The ending was no reward for sticking it out through the entire the witch genealogy. The strong female character set up in the beginning was irrelevant in the ending. As far as I could see it could have been anyone with a womb.
