5.0 von 5 Sternen love the romp! 2. Juni 2014

This book is not just a recitation of historical facts or even just an update on Gerald Gardner's brand of Wicca, the Gardnerian tradition. Instead, it is a retelling of sorts, from a variety of perspectives, of Gardner's history making work in publicizing and promoting the more modern approach to witchcraft. Arguably, Gardner also certainly promoted himself and his own ideas, but that's a tale for another day...

Instead of complete focus on only the Gardnerian update, Greenfield gives us the benefit of a general view of the current state of modern witchcraft, today, 60 years past Gardner's publication. It includes a variety of traditions and approaches to the craft that both beginner and adept can enjoy.

I'm not a fan of Gardner, but the book holds value far above any individual figure within. Even this goddess oriented, Divine feminine witch approves. Blessed be.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A look into the diverse forms of contemporary witchcraft. 12. Juni 2014

In Witchcraft Today 60 Years Later, we get a look into the diverse forms of contemporary witchcraft decades after Gerald Gardner's 1954 release of his controversial book.

Though this book doesn't include all forms of modern witchcraft, there are several mentioned here. Followers of Moon Books will recognize many authors and will be delighted to learn more about their craft. I love the essay on Nature Witches by Rachel Patterson. This is the closest to my chosen path and I felt she represented it eloquently. I enjoyed reading about paths such as Hekatean Witchcraft, Traditional British Old Craft, and The Seax Tradition. The essay Witchcraft Tomorrow by David Salisbury is an enlightening read.

In the second half of the book we are presented with some wonderful essays by everyday witches and pagans about how the craft has touched their lives. This is my favorite part of Witchcraft Today.

Witchcraft Today 60 Years Later will be a wonderful addition to your occult library. Filled with glimpses into modern Witchcraft and Paganism, this book is one I will be coming back to quite often.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved it! 9. Juli 2014

Witchcraft Today was one of the forerunners in the field, opening doors to a whole new world for many people who were searching for a path but didn't know where to look. Today, there are a lot of books, and still people just starting may not be sure what they want to pursue.

60 years on, gives not only an account of how the original came to be, but a wide variety of current paths and practices. If you are new to the practice of witchcraft, or perhaps you know someone who practices and you want to know more, this book will give you a lot of insight not only into the wide variety of paths, but also the many variances in the people who identify as witches.

Even those who have walked the path for a whole or have done previous research into the subject will likely find things they were unaware of.

With topics ranging from kitchen witchery to Egyptian and from Dianic to male witches, there's something for everyone, and probably something you didn't even know you were interested in.

The final section includes essays of a more personal nature, and the openness of the authors was incredible. Being able to see the struggles others have faced helps make you feel less alone, even if you don't know anyone in your area who shares your interests.

I highly recommend this book for all levels of experience. It is well written and the wealth of knowledge within is amazing. I found myself taking little notes constantly of things I wanted to look up more about.

5.0 von 5 Sternen If you're looking to re-fire your enthusiasm! 4. Juli 2014
Von Charis L Branson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Witchcraft Today--60 Years On is an anthology of written work gathered from various sources. Pagans, Wiccans, Fae, Druids, male and female all contribute information regarding their path, beliefs, and journeys. The reader is given a nicely rounded-out account of how witchcraft has developed in the 60 years since Gerald Gardner's seminal work.

The first chapter gives us a succinct look into Gardner's Witchcraft Today (1954) and its development. Following are chapters on Alexandrian Witchcraft, Seax, Eclectic, Dianic, Hedge, and Egyptian traditions. There's even a chapter on the future of Witchcraft as an ever growing entity. What may sound like a boring subject is made fascinating by the personal, heartfelt accounts of each of the contributors. Their devotion is inspiring, and their knowledge and intelligence captivating!

The final part of the book is devoted to personal accounts of various adherents who were forced to take a circuitous path to their calling in the Craft. The stories of those who began in controlling Christian religions resonated with me the most. As a child, I remember feeling intrigued by talk of Witchcraft and the occult, even though I was taught to fear it. I was fascinated to learn of others who felt the same pull between 10-14 years of age, but were more courageous than I. Some of them followed their heart at an early age--I waited another 20+ years before I had the courage to do so.

Recently, I have allowed my Craft to wane since I moved across country and most of my supplies are still in storage. Reading this book has fired my enthusiasm to get back to something that brought me so much comfort and empowerment as I recovered from my Patriarchal roots. The chapter on Hekatean Witchcraft showed me where my next path lay. When I first started studying Witchcraft in 2011, I was drawn to Hecate. I was born in the dark of the moon and it is my favorite time of the month. Samhain is my favorite holiday and Autumn my favorite season. I am fascinated with the world of the dead and beyond. But I was informed by someone that only older women can be devotees of Hecate, so I chose someone else--but it never felt right. Now I realize I can embrace the patron who feels right to me and I am excited to do so!

This book is for anyone who is curious about Witchcraft and its various paths. It is faith inspiring to read of how others live in accord with the earth and its spirit. And it can fire up anyone whose interest has waned or wandered.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A timely addition to Pagan literature 4. Juli 2014
Von James Nichol - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Highly recommended to anyone interested in the modern heritage of witchcraft, paganism and new (or new old) spiritual movements more generally. This book celebrates the 60 years since the publication of Gerald Gardner’s Witchcraft Today in 1954, affirming the confidence, dynamism and increasing openness of this growing tradition from a diverse range of insider perspectives.

The book is divided into two parts. The first, ‘Forms, Themes and Values’, begins with an account by Philip Heselton of how Gardner came to write Witchcraft Today. It goes on to look at ten specific forms of modern witchcraft that diverge from Gardner’s own, starting with Alex Sanders and going on to look at more radical departures like Seax Wica and the feminist Dianic tradition. Some of the other paths described are less formal and ceremonial than the original models. Some are group based and others solitary.

Some can be distinguished from witchcraft altogether (the Egyptian Magical Tradition and Hekatean practice based on the approach of the Chaldean Oracles, to name two). The same issue arises at the end of the book, where a contributor talks about a journey through an Ovate Grade training in the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids (OBOD). In each case, it matters to the practitioner that they are practising these traditions as a form of witchcraft. Their inclusion in the book affirms the value of self-identification in spirituality and adds to an overall feel of inclusiveness. Any question would be about the potential weakening of the term witchcraft itself, in a context of such porous boundaries.

Part 1 also includes a chapter on the male experience of witchcraft and ends with one on ‘Witchcraft Tomorrow’ by David Salisbury, which demonstrates optimism about future possibilities and explores the issues of community building and leadership. Common themes in Part 1 include tensions between ‘preservation’ and ‘invention’ in lineage development, and ways of reconciling them. Common values include an avoidance of evangelism and a commitment to the ultimate autonomy of the practitioner.

Part 2, ‘Journey on a Crooked Path’, presents ten personal journeys. It is particularly good at describing the ways in which people sense unmet spiritual needs in early life and make the connections (through reading, significant life events or personal encounters) that lead them on to their chosen paths. Throughout the book, there’s the sense of person and path choosing each other. They know when it’s right - and often have to go to some trouble to find their home. The finding is reflected in the enthusiasm and commitment of the many people who have contributed to this valuable book.
