One time actress Elfrida Phipps retires to a country cottage but is almost immediately reactivated through the personal tragedy of a comparatively new friend, Oscar Blundell, with whom she moves to an imposing old house, his shared inheritance, in Scotland. "Are you still snowed in with us, Sam? I hope so," says Edwina. "It would be such fun for all of us to be together." And so they all live happily ever after.
Lynn Redgrave, a good reader, voices the characters well but there's a recurrent smugness of expression that neutralises feelings of sympathy for this assortment who are destined by too many coincidences. A story without tension, the burdens of bereavement and finance and pleasures of romance and companionship are determined by unlikely turns of fate and the benefit of acquaintances who facilely solve the problems. --Running time 6 hours

Rosamunde Pilcher's novel, despite its chilly setting, will warm the hearts of her growing army of loyal fans. Winter Solstice has all the familiar trademarks of a Pilcher saga, spun in her inimitable, homey, beguiling style. The story is told, chapter by chapter, from the perspectives of an eclectic array of characters. Former actress Elfrida--not very good by her own admission--leaves London for a geriatric bolthole in the country where she meets retired schoolmaster and organist, Oscar. Meanwhile, Carrie (Elfrida's second cousin), returns to London from Austria where she had a brilliant career in the tourist industry, only to find her niece, 14-year-old Lucy, sadly neglected by her selfish mother and equally spoiled grandmother. Finally, handsome Sam is recalled from New York by his company chairman to revive an ailing Scottish textile mill.
As one character after another must learn to live with their losses, they find themselves collectively spirited northwards, from Sussex to Scotland, by way of Cornwall. And, as events unfurl, slowly, surely, but inevitably, those in need find solace in unexpected places. Not being a genre that I normally read, I was pleasantly surprised. Pilcher was able to paint a picture of the lives of a handful of people without any wasted words or descriptions. She made you a deal that you were there. Two worlds that is just as real as the one that you wake up to. Yet even though the people are familiar the environment is unique. It is what you that he'll as you read this book that makes it worth of re-reading. My only wish is that there would be a sequel.I'm now reading the book after first listening to the tape-recording, Read by Lynn Redgrave. Lynn has a pleasant reading voice and can distinguish between the characters well enough that you don't have to guess who is talking. The abridged version allows you to follow the story without taking too many sidetracks. Rosamunde Pilcher, Is one of the few writers that can make the sidetrack is interesting is the main story. She has made the reconsider this genre I would describe the story itself, but it is better to have it unfold before your eyes. You will not be disappointed. This book was a delight to read and reread. Although not my favourite Rosamunde Pilcher novel it was certainly not a disappointment. She has mastered the skill of creating characters that are very real and are hard to leave at the end of the novel.Her descriptions of Scotland are vivid and accurate. ANOTHER DISAPPOINTMENT,

I started out enjoying this book, a relief after her last, Coming Home, which was too lengthy. But two-thirds along the way, disappointment set in. One is required yet again to suspend belief so much. The characters are not fully rounded and are presented as so boringly sympathetic in spite of their foolish and nasty behavior (sad, heartbroken Carrie could be characterized as the selfish "other" woman). They are all so perfect, it's sterile. Pilcher seems to be writing to a formula of total escapism which, in the end, is a vacuum. Yet again, her descriptions are over the top and ridiculous in many cases. The grammar is sloppy and her writing is often irritating. I doubt I shall be buying her next book, nor even borrowing it from the library. But it's always interesting to read other people's opinions - there's more variety in the reviews than in this book!
