But I don't do Nothing any more. Well, not so much. They don't let you. Now my life is spent going around and around the thicket looking for the Woozle, or going bump, bump, bump down the stairs, thinking that there must be a better way, if only I could stop bumping long enough to think of it.
Now I need Pooh. I need to be reminded that spelling isn't everything - that there are some days when spelling TUESDAY simply doesn't count.
Pooh and Piglet are wondering where you've been. Eeyore told them that you're not coming back. "They've forgotten" said Eeyore. "Typical," said Eeyore. "How Like Them," he said.
But you can come back, you know. You can find a Thoughtful Spot, or join an Expotition for the North Pole, or even drop sticks off a bridge.
Because the Forest will always be there, and anyone who is Friendly with Bears can find it.
What! you say.
Well, I bought it a while back, and I never sat down to read it. So yesterday I just grabbed it, and started reading---and despite the fact that it's meant for children, the insight it offers is unparalleled. Maybe some of you have read "The Tao of Pooh" (which I read in high school). That book explains how Winnie the Pooh behaves in a Taoist fashion. But instead of reading the "Tao" book, I think people could have done just as well, if not better, reading the original work.
I have great respect for an author who can write a work that appeals to both children and adults. Such is "The Phantom Tollbooth" or "The Wizard of Oz." Such is "Winnie The Pooh." The joy of reading Winnie is the absurd logic it follows. Or the way it satirizes adults, which it does quite well through the characters of Eeyore and Owl. For example, how can you NOT enjoy this passage from Chapter Four:
"The old grey donkey, Eeyore, stood by himself in a thirsty corner of the forest, his front feet well apart, his head on one side, and thought about things. Sometimes he thought sadly to himself, 'Why?' and sometimes he thought, 'Wherefore?' and sometimes he thought, 'Inasmuch as which?'---and sometimes he didn't quite know what he was thinking about."
Now the only decision that remains is do I read the other Pooh book I bought, "The House at Pooh Corner" or do I read F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby." Hmm.
Die Sprecher, allen voran Stephen Fry als Winnie the Pooh und Jane Horrocks als Piglet, haben so viel Spaß bei der Sache, dass man nicht anders als mitgrinsen kann, wenn Pooh Bear seine selbstgedichteten "Lieder" vor sich hinsummt, oder Piglet Angst vor dem Heffalump hat, und Rabbit wieder mal ein Wort verdreht. Eeyore verbreitet eine ...äh... sehr aufmunternde Stimmung, und Tigger springt einen bald von der Cassette aus an!
Die Geschichten werden originalgetreu umgesetzt und sind aufgrund des gepflegten Englisch, das alle Sprecher beherrschen (alle voran Christopher Robin - dessen "Oxford English" ist schon fast übertrieben!) leicht zu verstehen. Jane Horrocks als Piglet quietscht zwar für meinen Geschmack manchmal ein bißchen zu sehr herum, aber man muss sie/es einfach gern haben. Und Stephen Fry ist einfach toll als Pooh. Das Ende ist rührend umgesetzt, und hat mich in sehr sentimentaler Stimmung zurückgelassen.
Alles in allem: wenn man eine sehr gute Audio-Umsetzung der wundervollen Geschichten rund um den "silly old bear" haben möchte, kommt man um diese Cassetten nicht herum!
