Set in 2002, barely a year after 9/11, the novel presents a what-if scenario that's so plausible we have to remind ourselves that DeMille is making the whole thing up. Or is he? As usual, DeMille appears to have done a ton of research; what sets his thrillers apart from those of some of his competitors is the way he seamlessly incorporates real technology and real government organizations into his stories. It really is tough to tell what parts of his novels are real and what are the products of his imagination. And although Operation Wild Fire, the American nuclear retaliatory strategy that Madox hopes to jump-start, is fictional, DeMille makes us believe that something very like it could and possibly does exist. Nelson Demille is back! After a boring book "Nightfall", Demille has finally done it again: a credible, scary story. A funny, sometimes hilarious John Corey, and a laid-back Kate Mayfield, who constantly tries to prevent Corey from getting himself into trouble. Great read! A sidenote to Mr. Demille: I'd like another Paul Brenner story!

Dies ist nun der vierte Roman um den ehemaligen NYPD-Detective John Corey und seine Arbeit bei der Anti-Terrorist Task Force (ATTF), der fiktionalen Version der real existierenden Joint Terrorist Task Force (JTTF).
Wild Fire ist dabei ein Begriff, der hier nur eines der Codeworte ist, das eine zunehmende Bedeutung erlangt, neben Project Green, MAD, ELF und einigen anderen netten Abkürzun-gen. Ursprünglich sollte dieser Roman mal unter dem Namen "Custer Hill Club" heraus kommen, was genauso passend gewesen wäre. Denn genau an diesem Ort und um diesen Ort spielt ein großer Teil der Romanstory.
Sehr nachdenklich stimmendes Grundkonzept, wenn man erst einmal weiß, was "Wild Fire" ist und sehr rasant umgesetzt, obwohl Johns Macho-Attitüde schon manchmal ein wenig nerven kann.
Aber das kommt ja beim Alphamännchenverhalten öfter vor und es wird durch ein weibliches Pendant etwas relativiert. Und er ist dadurch sicherlich ein ziemlich amüsanter Ich-Erzähler einer doch sehr erschreckenden Story.

Nelson DeMille is a member of The Authors Guild, the Mystery Writers of America, and American Mensa--and with Wild Fire, Demille proves that after fourteen novels he is still able to write a worthwhile and suspenseful detective thriller in which the heroes dispense justice in an ambiguous world!!! I would also recommend, if you missed reading TIN0 GEORGIOU'S masterpiece--THE FATES, go and read it. With fascinating and brilliantly created characters in `THE FATES' coupled with two intertwining plots makes for a completely enjoyable and page-turning read.
