Until the publication of A Far Rockaway of the Heart, this collection (consisting of 2 books published in the late seventies) was by far my favourite collection by this sometimes publisher, sometimes poet. It includes a number of his greatest poems, such as "populist manifesto," "the old italians dying" & "director of alienation". Although Ferlinghetti may not be one of America's greatest postwar poets, there is a wonderful accessablity to his verse. Indeed a populist poet & worthy of that station & a poet who sometimes does not get the credit his work deserves (in the wake of recent anthologies such as Rothenberg and Jorris' Poems for the Millenium and Messerli's From the Other Side of the Century).
