Pressestimmen

"My favorite book on Islam is the rationalist critique Why I Am Not a Muslim."
- Christopher Hitchens in The Atlantic Monthly

". . . a courageous and prophethic call to value and protect human rights, especially the rights of women."
- National Catholic Reporter

"The problem with a book such as this is that it will most likely never reach those most in need of it. How many libraries will stock it, or dare stock it if they knew its contents?"
-The New Humanist

". . . transcends The Satanic Verses in terms of sacrilege. Where Rushdie offered an elusive critique of Islam in an airy tale of magical realism, Ibn Warraq brings a scholarly sledgehammer to the task of demolishing Islam. Such an act, especially for an author of Muslim birth, is so incendiary that the author must write under a pseudonym; not to do so would be an act of suicide"
- The Weekly Standard

" . . . a completely compelling case for the conclusion that Islam is flatly incompatible with the establishment and maintenance of the equal individual rights and liberties of a liberal, democratic, secular state."
- Salisbury Review

"Ibn Warraq has done for Islam what Bertrand Russell did for Christianity, but at much greater personal risk. . . . His [fate] would be that of Salman Rushdie's were he to reveal his true name rather than the pseudonym he uses. This book is must reading for all who would understand the possibilities and the dangers of affirming multi-culturalism in today's world."
-The Human Quest

"At long last a writer has risen to the challenge posed by this religion of compulsion. He has put together in one book all the objectionable rules of Islam, and has made it into one of the best books about Islam that I have seen in many years. We must be extremely grateful to Ibn Warraq for his revealing book."
- Humanist in Canada

Kurzbeschreibung

Those who practice the Muslim faith have resisted examinations of their religion. They are extremely guarded about their religion, and what they consider blasphemous acts by skeptical Muslims and non-Muslims alike has only served to pique the world's curiosity. This critical examination reveals an unflattering picture of the faith and its practitioners. Nevertheless, it is the truth, something that has either been deliberately concealed by modern scholars or buried in obscure journals accessible only to a select few.

Good and true!
Ibn Warraq is a bestselling author and Islamic scholar currently living in the United States. He is an outspoken critic of Islam who has written extensively on what he views as the oppressive nature of Islam and religion in general.
The name Ibn Warraq is a pseudonym that has traditionally been adopted by dissident authors throughout the history of Islam.
Among the few personal details known about his life is that he was born in 1946 in Rajkot, India, to Indian-Muslim parents who soon emigrated to Pakistan, and that he studied at the University of Edinburgh under the Orientalist scholar Montgomery Watt.
Ibn Warraq has written several books, some of which are more scholarly and gather together critical research on such topics as the origins of the Qur'an and the life of Muhammad. Some of his books are polemical and strongly inveigh against Islam. Ibn Warraq promotes secular humanist values among Muslims.
You should also read "Twenty Three Years: A Study of the Prophetic Career of Mohammad" by Ali Dashti, an Irani.
And the book "Gabriels Einflüsterungen" (German) by Jaya Gopal.

It should be noted that, whenever Islam or tenets of Islam are questioned the results are often pandemonium. Accusations of "Racism" are often hurled at the perpetrators of the artistic work with the result that less and less creative efforts critical of certain aspects are being produced in any part of the world. This fact is incongruous given that Islam is the largest religion in the world whose scope and power reaches into almost every country, West or East. Any organization, secular or sacred, should not be immune from criticism. The fundamentalists have the best form of censorship; death. Marches and demonstrations and court battles can only accomplish so much. But death is quick and effective. And it is very effective at stifling opposition. It is much easier for Muslims to seek outside enemies to blame, hate and kill than to look within themselves and their religion.
I too, am a former Muslim and I am amazed by the courage of this writer. I once received threats just for writing an article critical of Islam in my University newspaper.
This author has given me the courage to re-engage in my writings and research on Islam.
Bravo!

I'm an ex-Muslim too. I was born in Egypt in an old Muslim family. When I was young I was very religious. I loved reading the Quran, and I felt that one of those days I will join my Dawa brothers and sisters and spread the true faith.
Then two years ago I was reading sura 111 :" Al- Lahab" and I could not believe that the God of the universe could be cursing an ignorant Arab and calling his wife names. This must have been the words of an ignorant man, and this man must be Muhammad.
I was very disturbed at my thoughts, and I started to read the next sura which is 112:"Al-Ekhlas" I became more confused. Why would the God of the universe brag about being the only one, and no one is equal to him. This sounded to me like a foolish vain and insecure human being talking and that they were not the words of the true God.
I stopped reading and I felt that a veil was lifted and I was able to see the truth, that the God of the Quran was nothing but Muhammad's wicked imagination
I went back to read the Quran again. The more I did read, the more I was able to see that the quran did not make any sense to me anymore. Why would God utter such nonsense as 9:4:" Slay the idolaters" or 5:51:" Believers take neither Jews nor Christians for your friends" when my best friend is a Copt.
Couple of weeks ago I started reading Abu Warraq's book and I just finished it, and I loved it. It did confirm to me that there are some courageous people out there share the way I feel.
Thank you Abu Warraq ...And yes I am not a Muslim anymore.

First let me briefly introduce myself : Dr Jan Knappert
formerly Lecturer at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS),London (1964 ) , then Professor of Islam at the University of Louvain , Belgium (1971) .I have written many articles for specialist journals , and am the co-author , with Professor Andrew Rippin , of what has become a standard textbook :
" Textual Sources for the Study of Islam " , Manchester University Press , 1986 .My other publications include The
Encyclopaedia of Middle East Mythology ; Indian Mythology , etc..
I should like to draw your attention to this most excellent book , Why I am Not A Muslim , by Ibn Warraq .
At long last a writer has risen to the challenge posed by this religion of compulsion in the Middle of the world , and has put together in one book all the objectionable rules of Islam , and has made it into one of the best books about Islam that I have seen in many years .
Let us examine this excellent book .
It proposes to " sow a drop of doubt in an ocean of dogmatic certainty by taking an uncompromising and critical
look at almost all the fundamental tenets of Islam ".(p.XIV)
To this end , the author quotes all the classical European Islamologists , including Arberry , Bell , Blachere , Bousquet , Gibb,Goldziher,Hiskett,Holt, Hughes, Hurgronje, Lane, Lewis,Margoliouth, Muir, Nicholson, Noldeke, Schacht (Snouck is the same as Hurgronje), Watt, Wensinck, Zwemer and of course as many Oriental scholars: Al Ma'arri, Al Bukhari, Ibn Ishaq etc...
