How Big Is Your God?

"A bright examination of modern Christianity" - Kirkus Reviews

Kirkus adds that Bernecker's points are "well-researched and well-articulated," giving the reader "a thought-provoking look at the modern definition of God." Amazon reviewer carpenterdaughter writes, "Bernecker faces some tough questions and doesn't attempt to defend God. He declares and reveals God. He points readers to the truth, and he uses God's own word to do it."

This eye-opening new book challenges readers to reevaluate their perceptions of God, and it thoughtfully exposes many misconceptions that are commonly found in the church of our day. Readers are led into a deeper understanding of the real God of the Bible and shown the path to a new and immensely satisfying relationship with their loving Father.

This compelling work is a thought-provoking and inspirational examination of how today's church views God. As the church struggles to truly experience the unchanging love of our heavenly Father and to rest confidently in God's perfect purpose for each of our lives, the cause of this crucial deficiency is usually overlooked. Who's Your Father? explains how our concept of God has grown increasingly flawed, and it reveals how we have been taught to view our sovereign Father as a benevolent gentleman who won't interfere with human free will. By fostering this view, we've unknowingly created a weak, unreliable, and frustrated God who we falsely believe will only occasionally choose to use his divine power to actively work in our lives in a powerful and effective manner.

Writing from the down to earth perspective of a well-versed layperson, Bernecker skillfully shows how we rob ourselves of incredible blessings when we miss the vital connection between the unlimited sovereignty and the unbounded love of the true God of the Bible.

An illuminating look at the true nature of God and his dealings with mankind, this extraordinarily insightful book will change readers' lives across the globe.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Robert Bernecker is a layperson who has been a longtime student of God’s word. He recently retired after thirty years at the helm of a multi-million dollar company, where he often witnessed the undeniable hand of God in his life and business. Over the years, he has held virtually every position in the church—leading various ministries, teaching countless classes, and chairing numerous boards. As a ministry to the church, Bernecker has also operated a business of designing and installing audio video systems for churches. This business has given him the priceless opportunity to interact and worship with God’s people from many different denominations and backgrounds. As a result of this life spent thoroughly immersed in the church, Bernecker demonstrates a firm grasp of both the church’s teachings and the impact of those teachings on the lives of God’s people. Written from the unique perspective of a layperson, Bernecker’s debut book is meant to enlighten and bless all of God’s people.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Coming To Grips With God's Amazing Love For You 2. Oktober 2013
Von Dr. David P. Craig - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
One of the main things that has been lost in modern Christianity is the Main Thing - God Himself. The church invests millions of dollars in programming, high-tech equipment, buildings, and the like. However, what we need more than anything is to be drenched with the reality of the character, nature, and intimacy there is to be found in our relationship with God - especially as He has clearly revealed Himself in the Bible.

Robert Bernecker has written a God-drenched book. He has written a book that tackles subjects as vast as the sovereignty of God, His providence, and our responsibility and will with reference to salvation and sanctification. The author tackles the "tough" doctrines of predestination, election, perseverance, and foreknowledge with theological precision, solid exegesis, and insight from 2,000 years of historical theology.

Without getting bogged down in theological debate, Bernecker simply lets the chips fall where they may by giving a plethora of Scriptures on the deepest and profoundest issues of Theology Proper - the doctrine of God. However, not leaving the reader in the realm of the abstract but taking you into the intimate arms of our loving Father.

If you want to understand the mind and heart of God and His will and purposes for humanity I highly recommend this book. It will give you a wonderful biblical theology of how God thinks and works in time and history - past, present, and future. In reading this book you will develop a higher view of God, and of His amazing plan for humanity - and for you - the reader. I urge you to take up this book and read about our Awesome God as revealed in the Scriptures and take the plunge in the waters of being drenched and soaked in God's glory. It's what you and I need more than anything else!

5.0 von 5 Sternen In Depth Treatment of the Subject! 28. September 2013
Von Adam Smith - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition

This book is broken down into 10 chapters of varying lengths. It combines the thoughtful analysis of an astute theologian with the pastoral heart of a devoted minister. From my correspondence with Robert and from reading the interview on it is apparent to this reviewer that Robert has been touched on a deep level by the scriptures that point to God's sovereignty in all things.

Each chapter deals with a major misconception about God's sovereignty that is common to many Christians from all backgrounds. Robert provides ample scripture references to back up each point. He deals with many counter-arguments along the way in a very fair and balanced manner. He demonstrates the problems with holding to each misconception when carried to their logical conclusions. He also avoids (for the most part) theological jargon that may not be familiar to many readers. From my understanding, his goal was to reach Christians from different backgrounds who may never have read any book dealing with these subjects.

I think it is fair to say that this book is very persuasive because of his careful handling of the texts of scripture and because of the construction of his argumentation. If you hold to the opposite theological conclusions before reading this book, by the time you finish it, you will be challenged to maintain your positions by going back to the Bible. This of course is the main strength of this book: it is very well grounded in the scriptures and the reasoning comes from the scriptures. I would recommend to any reader that he or she have a Bible handy to look up references along the way. It will definitely add to the experience and add weight to his arguments.

Here is a summary of each chapter:

"Learning From the Sparrows" (Ch. 1) - God is not merely observing the goings on in the world, he is in control of every circumstance and in those circumstances he exercises his sovereign will.
"The Illusion of a Gentleman God" (Ch. 2) - God is not subject to human wills nor does he stand by respectfully as a gentleman to wait upon our human whims.
"Praying to a Gentleman God" (Ch. 3) - If God is a "gentleman God" then prayer becomes ineffective because prayer implies that God interferes with human wills.
"The Big, The Small, and Our Present" (Ch. 4) - The many, many problems with holding to a low view of God and his sovereignty. How a high view of God properly elevates and reveals God's love for his elect.
"Our Future is Heading Our Way" (Ch. 5) - How our destiny is from the Lord and not from human will. How God's plans will be accomplished.
"Our Loving Father God, or the Great Puppeteer?" (Ch. 6) - A refutation of the view that God is some kind of puppet master and that humans do not possess a will of their own.
"Fair is Fair, or Is It?" (Ch. 7) - A defense of the wisdom, justice and love of God in light of holding to a high view of God and his sovereignty.
"Heavenly Robots" (Ch. 8) - A refutation of the objection that a high view of God and his sovereignty makes humans out to be nothing more than robots.
"Unchanging Perfection" (Ch. 9) - An exposition of the truth that God holds the outcome of the universe in his hands. Human wills cannot thwart the plans of God.
"The God of Our Confidence" (Ch. 10) - A right view of the sovereignty of God can give believers great confidence in their daily lives. It also helps us to exalt God in worship as he deserves.

I would certainly recommend this book to anyone searching for biblical answers to questions of divine sovereignty and human responsibility. Robert provides a book not only worth reading, but also for studying in depth. I would urge the reader to take this book seriously and to examine the scriptures like the Berean Christians did in the book of Acts:
10 As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true. 12 As a result, many of them believed, as did also a number of prominent Greek women and many Greek men. (Acts 17:10-12, NIV)

Have you ever been at that place in your spiritual journey-either by circumstance or simply because you've found yourself thirsting for more--where you feel as if you're either going circles or stubbing your toe against something in the dark? This book, packed to overflowing with Biblical support, will help open your eyes to see more of our mighty God, and could very well be one tool our Father uses to reveal more of Himself to you.

Bernecker faces some tough questions and doesn't attempt to defend God. He declares and reveals God. He points readers to the truth, and he uses God's own word to do it. If you do as the writer asks and read the book with your Bible open, you will see more truth than you may have ever seen before. It isn't "light" reading. You may have to struggle with some things and wrestle with some scripture. If that happens, don't be shocked and give up. Re-read Bernecker's words and re-read the scripture. Do it prayerfully, asking the Father to reveal Himself to you. Because we are His children, He wants us to know Him. He wants us to worship Him in spirit and in truth, and He wants us to be confident in Him. He also wants us to find comfort in this world and our often confusing circumstances. We cannot be confident in Him if we don't know who He is. Reading this book and absorbing the Word of God that is its bedrock will help you sort through much of your own unbelief and lead you to your Rock.

The fact that this book exists proves, for me, everything that Bernecker claims. It is God, our Awesome Father, calling His children to know who He is and to know who they are because of who He is. Bernecker isn't the only one proclaiming this truth. Pay attention.

4.0 von 5 Sternen A Masterful Presentation of God's Divine Sovereignty 19. Dezember 2013
Von Richard R. Blake - Veröffentlicht auf
Who’s Your Father? Returning to the Love of the Biblical God by Robert Bernecker is a masterful presentation of God’s divine sovereignty. Bernecker carefully considers major misconceptions about God’s providence, man’s responsibility, free will, and the doctrines of predestination, election, perseverance and foreknowledge.

Bernecker’s writing combines the thoughtful analysis of a judicious theologian with the passionate heart of a pastor. He is persuasive and authoritative; his writing is balanced, Biblically sound, and worthy of note. He is a master at exegesis; as well as able to skillful in presenting practical application, devotional inspiration and motivation. He is meticulous in the documentation of his exhaustive research and is a devoted student of historical theology.

Writings from noted Theologians, including: Albert Barnes, J. I. Packer, Adam Clarke, John Wesley, C. H. Spurgeon, A. W. Tozer, A.W. Pink, and many others reinforce Bernecker’s conclusions. It is Bernecker’s desire that the reader will experience God’s love with a deeper understanding, be transformed in their relationship with Him, and cause them to reexamine their doctrinal biases.

Who’s Your Father? Returning to the Love of the Biblical God is worthy of careful reading and additional study. The format and approach of the material give the book added value for adaptation for small group study, adult church Bible classes, for inclusion on suggested reading lists and as curriculum for foundational courses in Bible Colleges.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided for review purposes. The opinions expressed are my own.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Gods plan for you 30. Juli 2013
Von Pablo - Veröffentlicht auf
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wonders if God truly has a plan for their life. Having recently passed age 50, and a Christian college graduate, my views on theology were set...or so I thought. This well documented book changed my perspective. Though I resisted a shift in outlook, the depth of scriptural documentation in Bernecker's book is overwhelming. I spent a lot of time mentally processing the thesis of "Who's Your Father," but in the end, the book gave me insight into recognizing just what God is up to. It's challenging and powerful.
