unsung words are not songs 12. April 2012
Von J. Minkman - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
... and unlit torches might as well be gone.

To me, this volume is a wonderful, surreal landscape of incidents and observations. Theoretically, the surreal and bizarre poems shouldn't make sense, but they somehow do, and each of them trigger an emotional response in me. I guess this volume could mean a thousand different things to a thousand different people. This is a book to keep and re-read every once in a while, to see if the colours change and a different meaning suddenly jumps out at you.

There is the wit and sarcasm of 'Balancing Act', and the down-to-earthness of 'It's not so bad'. The 'Letters from Josh to Emily' sequence really draws you in, and 'Reflections' grabs you by the throat and is downright frightening. The poet carefully voices his doubts in 'Still not dancing', and uses absurdist humour in a short story like `Strawberry Tears'. The author also refers to having recovered from substance abuse here and there, but it's not in your face, and it's not the main point of this volume.

The poems that are sticking to a strict rhyming scheme are the least fluent, funnily enough. Sometimes they are trying to tell a story way too hard. But the gems in between where the author lets loose are brilliant. I have the feeling that these poems have been written within the time span of at least a few years, because there is some discrepancy in style. I am glad I downloaded this book though, and I recommend it to anyone looking for interesting poetry looking at all kinds of topics from all kinds of angles.

Every page has meaning 28. April 2013
Von Mo from the O - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
Great read!

The poems and prose in this book have much substance & imagery the reader can relate to. Poems that stick with the reader for days (or longer as in my case). The mix of prose, poetry and some illustrations keeps the cadence of this book even toned while not being mono toned. I thoroughly enjoyed the poems that engaged the reader such as in "Beauty".

The journey the author invites the reader on is a rough path described with beautiful words, to make you feel and understand the emotion behind each piece.

I really enjoyed White Elephant and at this point have read it 2 times!

I encourage everyone to pick up a copy!

The Elephant in the Room 10. April 2012
Von Nicolina Nicthe - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verifizierter Kauf
Sometimes we tend to ingore the elephant in the room but I find that White Elephant faces the reality of what addiction, depression, sadness and suicidal ideations can do to a person. There is a great sadness in many of the poems that one can almost feel the pain the writer is expressing while learning to cope with addition and depression and by putting it in to words healing even if only by one word at a time. Well done and definately well worth the read.

Excellent beginning 7. April 2013
Von Raegan Butcher - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
This is the first book I've read by this author, but it certainly won't be the last. Phil is the real deal: compassionate, intelligent, honest, self-deprecating, sensitive, perceptive. When one is all of those things today, the result can be a lot of pain. But Phil is also a survivor. Someone once said that poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world. Phil is a poet in the truest sense: a man who takes the raw material of his life and spreads it across the page, sneaking up on his own soul. The writing contained in this book seethes with life, messy, searching, throbbing life. I look forward to reading more of Phil's work because his is a voice worth hearing.
We all have those dreams that you feel like you can touch 2. Oktober 2014
Von Donald Armfield - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
White Elephant. We all have those dreams that you feel like you can touch, the words of this author leaves thought and a question. Am I awake yet? This collection is not better than his second collection which I recommend reading. Praise for "Scribbles!"

A quote from Volatalistic Phil. "Heart shaped butt passing. It's the little things in life. That give me meaning."

"Strawberry Tears" I could see being adapted into a childrens book. A strawberry crying for help from a caterpillar with an eye patch.

"Beauty" Phil turns the poem to be read backwards, something to say in the mirror.

"Winter Memories" is a heart felt, writing piece with memories of a Christmas morning with no money. I can relate to this piece, well said.

Some poems that stuck out for me.
