In terms of raising the readers’ pulse rate, Becket demonstrated a casual mastery -- and Whispers of the Dead similarly sports all the tightly screwed tension that Becket trades in so successfully.
Forensic supremo David Hunter is chafing from the after-effects of the gruesome events of his last assignment and has made an ameliorative journey to the research faculty at which he polished his skills: the institution known as the Body Farm in Tennessee. Hunter receives a request from the man who polished his forensic skills to take a trip to a crime scene – a cabin in the woods, miles from anywhere. The grisly scenario that awaits him there is all too redolent of the horrors he has encountered in the past (the victim’s body is in an advanced state of decomposition, but it has been bound and tortured). Shortly after, a second corpse is discovered, and David Hunter is once again treading familiar territory involving lethal mind games with an ingenious and relentless psychopath.

Whispers of the Dead von Simon Beckett ist definitv lesenswert.
Interessant sind besonders auch die fachlichen Bezugspunkte zum Fachbereich der Forensik. Der Leser erhält spannende Einblicke in die Arbeit von Dr. David Hunter, dem Protagonisten der Reihe.
Allerdings wird durch diese lange Vorarbeit der Forensiker der Fokus eher auf deren Arbeit als auf eine spannende Handlung gelegt. Erst im letzten Viertel des Buches kommt Spannung auf. Auch wenn die Auflösung am Ende des Buches zumindest zum Teil vorhersehbar ist, kann man das Buch empfehlen. Wer allerdings Simon Becketts The Chemistry of Death gelesen hat, wird von Whispers of the Death etwas enttäuscht sein.
Weiterer Negativpunkt: Der Kleber am Buchrücken war bei meiner Ausgabe so schlecht, dass sich das gesamte Buch aufgelöst hat (Ausgabe Bantam Press).

A few words for classification: This is the third David Hunter novel by S. Beckett. I liked the first one a lot - very suspenseful, unexspected twists and introducing a very likeable protagonist. The second one was less thrilling, more contrived and the twists a little less unexspected. Whispers of the Dead achieves the same quality as the first one.
The protagonist - David Hunter - struggels with getting back to his old job and tries to do so by leaving London for a while and going to the "Body Farm" in the USA. Shortly after his arrival he is pulled into a murder investigation by a friend and colleague. But this investigation is not an easy one to solve - he isn't an officially registered expert in the States, he doesn't trust his instincts anymore, still doesn't know whether he wants to pursue his career and the murder seems to know a lot about how the police/TBI and his colleagues are approaching their work. These problems not only make this story captivating, suspenseful and thrilling but more realistic.
It is a great read and I can only recommend it!

The book is as good as Chemistry of Death, absolutely facinating with a surprise ending. As with Chemistry of Death you start reading and don't want to stop.
