A serial killer has one obsession . . .

Claire Lambert walked into a nightmare on a rainy night in Washington, D.C. Stumbling upon a killer in the midst of his latest bloody crime, she ran for her life -- but not before a head injury caused her to lose her memory, along with her purse and ID. Now a monster knows who Claire is . . . and where she lives.

Waking up in a hospital room the day after being attacked -- her mind stripped of all memory of what happened to her -- Claire can only listen with horror to the scenario Detective Sean Richter unfolds before her. A law officer fiercely dedicated to ending the wave of brutal killings that has struck the city, Sean knows that this brave and beautiful woman holds the key to stopping the murderer before he can strike again. Claire is the only victim who has seen the killer's face and lived -- which is why Sean needs her help and will risk everything to protect her . . .

And why a depraved, relentless animal is determined that Claire Lambert must die.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Heather Lowell was born and raised in Southern California. She attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., where she began her love affair with foreign languages, international politics, and off-the-beaten-path travel. She's journeyed by bus, train, and boat throughout the developing world, meeting local people and practicing her language skills -- the occasional face-to-face encounter with livestock was an added bonus. While her "list of things to do before settling down" is still quite long, Heather has already crossed off hiking the Andes, going up the Amazon River, backpacking through Australia and New Zealand, SCUBA diving, bungee jumping, white-water rafting, caving, and jumping out of an airplane.

In the 1990s, Heather studied in Brazil, volunteered as an English teacher in Hungary, and earned a Master's degree in International Development. She briefly considered becoming a professional traveler before deciding that defaulting on her student loans wasn't a lofty career goal. Instead, she served her time in a cubicle as a project manager in Information Technology, where her life closely paralleled that of the comic strip Dilbert. When the tech bubble burst and the stock market plummeted, Heather took it as a sign that she should get out of the corporate world and follow her dream of writing. She hasn't looked back since that day.

Despite an adventurous past, Heather Lowell now considers herself to be a dedicated homebody -- with a car, mortgage, and dog to prove it. She currently lives in Arizona, where she is working on her next book.

5.0 von 5 Sternen ein geniales Buch 1. August 2004
Weiter so Heather Lowell!!!!

5.0 von 5 Sternen An excellent foray into romantic suspense! 10. Oktober 2004
Von B. L. Young - Veröffentlicht auf
I purchased this book on a whim and, after reading the Publisher's Weekly review, nearly didn't get past the cover. I'm certainly glad I chose to judge it for myself. I completely disagree with the professional review of this work. Sure, the storyline could have been tightened up a bit to achieve a faster pace. Personally, I think the onus for that belongs as much to the editor as the author. But, for an inexperienced, nascent novelist this was an excellent foray into romantic suspense.

The prose was terse, contemporary (young and fresh) and rang true for me - something so lacking in many romance novels. The plot's climax was gripping. The characters grabbed hold of my heart such that, when the last page was read, I felt a sense of bereavement at the thought of ending the book; Ms Lowell crafted characters for whom I cared very deeply. For me, that sense of loss at a book's conclusion ONLY occurs with the very best characterizations from the likes of Nora Roberts, Julie Garwood, Linda Howard and, of course, Elizabeth Lowell.

I acknowledge that TV soap watchers may consider the amnesia plot device to be shop-worn. However, the plot devices used in this novel worked for me - they were well-crafted, intriguing and mostly believable. And the date scenarios were certainly no more clichéd than that which we find on episodes of Sex in the City. In addition, I did not find the love scenes to be prosaic in the least. For anyone who is TIRED of flowery, syrupy, melodramatic love scenes, you won't find them here; you won't find the typical fomulaic phrasing, the esoteric and worn-out euphemisms nor the vaguely-described action. I found Ms. Lowell's love scenes to be plausible and titillating yet tasteful. They were exactly right.

For myself, my next click is to order the second Heather Lowell book. She's earned a place on my list of must-buy authors. Keep `em coming, Heather!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved It!!! 20. Januar 2004
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf
Claire sees the face of a murderer right after he has committed his crime. He chases her and she gets away but not without injury. She is unable to remember the murder or the murderer. Sean is the police detective who is in charge of Claire's case and tracking the serial killer who is pursuing Claire to rid himself of the only witness to ever see him. Sean and Claire are attracted to each other. Sean knows he can't get involved with a witness but he can't stay away from her either. This was a great first book from a new author! I enjoyed it will definately purchase Heather Lowell's next title when it comes out. I recommend this book to all lovers of romantic suspense!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Great Book 7. Juni 2004
Von bugg84067 - Veröffentlicht auf
This is a GREAT book, especially seeing as how it is Heather's first book. Great suspense, wonderful romance. I expected Heather's writing to be similar to her mom's (Elizabeth Lowell (a.k.a. Ann Maxwell), and was shocked at how different her writing is. You will not be disappointed. I can't wait for the next book. Thanks Heather for the wonderful book.

Adult content: sex and violence
When The Storm Breaks is a romantic thriller set in Washington D.C. Marie Claire Lambert is heading home from a late night appointment and stumbles across a serial killer finishing off his latest victim. When he spots her, she takes flight, looking for the nearest refuge. Before she can reach the door to an all-night ladies club, she slips on the stairs in the rain and is knocked unconscious. As she drifts in and out, she is able to tell the people who find her she has witnessed a murder, but when she fully regains consciousness, all memory of the event is blocked. Will she remember who the killer is before he can kill his only witness?
Marie Claire is a strong, independent, 30-year-old woman who knows how to take care of herself in the big city. Her life is threatened by a serial killer when she becomes his only witness, but all she can remember of that night is a horrible smile on a face she saw in a picture. Retracing the events of that evening, all leads point to the dating agency run by her friend and the photos Claire was looking over before she saw the killer.
Sean Richter is the detective assigned to protect Claire. One look at her in the hospital and his interest in her goes beyond professional. For Sean, his struggle to maintain professionalism makes his job that much more difficult. He sends mixed signals to Claire, unable to deny his attraction to her and yet forbidden to act on it. They work together along with Claire's close-knit group of friends to identify the killer knowing that Claire is the next target.
This book was a page-turner! The action was nonstop and the tension between Sean and Claire was tangible. Ms. Lowell's ability to take us through the police investigation and the pratfalls of avoiding the personal relationship were intense and realistic. This book was thrilling to the very end.

Wow, I wish all authors could come out of the gate with this kind of debut! This is my FIRST EVER review; I was so impressed with this book, I just had to talk about it. If you're into police heroes and strong heroines, then this is the book for you. I found it alternately scary and funny, especially when Claire is going on her "dates". I felt my heart pounding at the end, and let me tell you, it's been a long time since a book has given me that effect. Can't wait for more from this amazingly talented newcomer!
