Produktbeschreibungen

Amazon.co.uk

For three decades Richard Nelson Bolles's annually updated and revised Parachute has been cheerfully advising people that the best way to find a job or make a career change isn't to answer a job ad and/or send in a CV. That way, the statistical odds are heavily stacked against success. Instead he advocates a creative three-pronged approach. You are in charge so be proactive and sell yourself. First identify your talents (and of course you've got lots). Then work out where you would like to apply these transferable skills. Lastly, decide how you will pursue organisations which interest you. Thereafter it's down to your efforts: "Successful job hunting is a learned skill. You have to study it. You have to practice it. You have to master it, just like any new skill. And master it thoroughly because you'll need it all the rest of your life", says Bolles.

An ordained Episcopal priest, Bolles was canon pastor of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco. Made redundant in 1968, he created another career by publishing the first edition of Parachute in 1971--then little more than a newsletter. Today it is published in 10 languages world-wide and bought by 20,000 people a month. It's an immensely detailed, friendly book whose attractive layout includes coloured fonts, nice historical sketches and lots of easy-to-read grids, charts and even the odd poem. Useful Internet site addresses abound. And although Parachute is American, most of Bolles's advice is just as applicable in Britain as in the US. Bolles evidently means to be inspirational and is. He's also down to earth. Once you get into an interview you are much more likely to get the job if you don't reek of aftershave, perfume or garlic and if you've had a bath and pressed your clothes, he points out. --Susan Elkin -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

For nearly 30 years, What Color Is Your Parachute? has been the guiding light for those in pursuit of satisfying and fulfilling employment. The 1999 edition has been completely revised and rewritten and is designed to work in conjunction with the book's Web site. At the heart of Bolles's formula for finding the right job are two questions: What do you want to do? Where do you want to do it?

Answer those and you're well on your way to finding the job you really want. Packed with time-tested advice, What Color Is Your Parachute? works as a good companion for those just starting out in the "real world" as well as for those who are thinking seriously about a career change. --Harry C. Edwards, Amazon.com -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

I am a career coach with eight years of experience working with people wanting a new career - a better fit with their talents, more meaningful, a better work environment. If you want to choose a career that will be very fulfilling as well as something you will be successful at, forget about "Parachute". It just doesn't have the depth and wisdom it takes to coach you through this most important life decision.

Another career counselor who reviewed "Parachute" recommended that you get two other books instead. I agree. They are "The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career for a Lifetime of Satisfaction and Success" by Lore, and "Do What You Are" by Tieger. "The Pathfinder" is the best career decision book ever, the seminal text, the masterpiece on the subject - this is, if you are serious about having a great life and unwilling to put up with less. I also agree with the other reviewer that "Parachute" is a great job hunting book, but only if you know exactly what job you are looking for. Reading "Parachute" takes some of the fear and uncertainty out of job hunting. But if you are trying to decide what to do with your life, forget about "Parachute".

Are you looking for a job or are you considering a career change? Or do you simply want to re-evaluate the job you currently have? Are you in a position where you have to hire others? Or do you want some guidance evaluating your personal mission in life? The audio version of this book, clearly read by the author, is an excellent tool for all of the above questions, and more. The more I listened, the more I realized that this was not just a book about job-hunting, but it is also a book about ethics in the workplace.Find out why the most common job-hunting techniques, such as reading the want ads and sending out resumes, are among the least effective methods for landing a job. Find out how to zero in on your own skills and interests, and with that information use more effective techniques for landing a "dream job."In my case, by the time I was done with this audio book, I realized that the time was not right for change for me, and that my current job suits my interests and talents quite well. The epilogue on finding your mission in life, was a suprise bonus that made listening to the whole book worth it for me!

This book helped me find a job in a bad economy. I think that says it all. I have worked with a career counselor to help me find a good job fit. She had me go through a good book called Finding A Career That Works For You, by W. Fellman, M.Ed. Fellman's book gave me tests to take within the book, and directed me to a good job title. I recommend both of these books very much. Use Fellman's book to figure out what you'd be good at, and go from there.
