Pressestimmen

“Over the course of many animated conversations, I have learned an awful lot about opera from Robert Levine. I hear his voice throughout this book - erudite, generous, musicianly, almost impossibly well-informed and often hilariously funny.” (Tim Page, Pulitzer Prize-winning music critic and author of Parallel Plays)

“I couldn’t imagine a finer or livelier guide through the world of opera than Robert Levine, for newcomers and crazed fans alike. He distills a lifetime of passion and insight into this immensely enjoyable survey, and with the right comic touch to make you wonder how opera ever seemed intimidating.” (Thomas May, author of Decoding Wagner)

Kurzbeschreibung

"Icouldn't imagine a finer or livelier guide through the world of opera. . . . [Levine] distills a lifetime of passion and insight into this immenselyenjoyable survey, and with the right comic touch to make you wonder how operaever seemed intimidating." —Thomas May, author of Decoding Wagner

Despitethe popular success of the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD” series, opera’s grandworld of soaring sopranos and breathtaking baritones—of tragic Rigoletto, triumphal Sigmund, and desperate Orfeo, of faithful Figaro, heartbroken Pagliacci, and lusty Don Giovanni—remains wrapped in an aura of impenetrable esotericism.Piercing this veil of opera’s perceived inaccessibility, acclaimed classicalmusic critic Robert Levine extends a witty and insightfulinvitation to enjoy opera in Weep, Shudder, Die, offering a newgeneration of aficionados a priceless way to access to music’s greatest achievement.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Learn, Laugh, Applaud--and sing 29. Juni 2011
Von Susan Berenzweig - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
Give this book to everyone you know who has ever sung you a song, or reminded you of one. I want to sing praises for Levine's contribution. It is not just for opera fans, but for fans of life and art. This is a short, immensely readable, sometimes irreverent, hysterically funny book for everyone. It will allow novices to enter the sometimes daunting field of High Culture feeling that they belong because they know enough to have a conversation about opera--and music and theater in general. It will give the experienced opera goer something to laugh over and to think about, e.g. "People love group crying". It made me search my memory files for past opera experiences to share with the author, e.g. Bjorling "made my body shake". I compared my memories of arias and productions and singers with Levine's. And of course, I learned about what I thought I knew and what I wanted to know about even more. There are so many operas and singers out there. I'm happy Levine's book will be my guide as I take the opportunity to Shudder and Weep, but also to Exhalt and Qvell.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Weep, Shudder, Die: A Guide to Loving Opera 24. Juni 2011

Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Weep,Shudder, Die is the best book on opera now. It is informative and very entertaining. For all opera lovers, it is a must read; and for those who are intimidated by opera, this is your chance to learn a real appreciation for this wonderful art form. I want everyone I know to read it and share the delicious experience. I urge you to buy it for your friends, families, and for those you want to convert to opera lovers. I want to buy it for everyone, I know, today, and perhaps I will. Sue Pollock

5.0 von 5 Sternen "Weep, Shudder, Die" but MOST of All, ENJOY YOURSELF! 26. Januar 2012
Von Gregory E. Foster - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Robert Levine certainly has "outdone" himself, so to speak with this absolutely lovely, very entertaining and highly educational little tome, dressed in its delightful silky white cover. I mention the cover, because it truly is a pleasure to hold this little book in one's hand....it just feels "right" for what it is!

The title is from a quote by Bellini concerning the purpose of opera, "what it SHOULD do" for the listener.

If I could wish for "something more" (other than MORE insight into MORE operas than those 50 presented here, logically divided by Nationality or "Type", (German, Italian, French, etc.)), it would have been to have an additional appendix of more of these "Quotes" like Bellini's regarding opera from many others over the years directly related to or involved in the world of opera. I would find these to be very entertaining and insightful.

Perhaps a Second Volume will come along, since this one is so very well written, insightful, educational, and deeply deeply funny and fun to read. Even an old "Pro" like myself, steeped in the operatic world for years longer than I can practically remember now, I found several NEW bits that I had never known before! Kudos, Bob Levine! Now, Mr. Levine, are you Listening???? Twice now in this review I have directly and indirectly asked for MORE!

Please, folks like myself are missing your insights and comments on Der Freischutz, Tannhauser, Parsifal, Elektra, Die Frau Ohne Schatten, Macbeth, Nabucco, Falstaff, La Forza Del Destino, I Puritani, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, Roberta Deveraux, Les Pecheurs de Perles, Pelleas et Melisande, Manon, A Kekszakallu Herceg Vara, and even up into more modern recent works, like Sallinen's Ratsummes and The Red Line, Lear, and some of the "forbidden works" from Wartime Germany and just previous. Surely, Mr. Levine, you could give us deeply needed insight into the works of Janacek and Dvorak and more Tchaikovsky and Weill. We would deeply like to have more, more More! So, please, please, Please begin work on "Volume 2" right away!

That being said, take this delightful little book for what it is, and Enjoy Yourself in the Delightful Romp it will take you on through the 50 basic opera repertory choices that Robert Levine has made for you here and shares his insight with you...what a great introduction for some this fantastic little book is or would be.

I am the leader of my local book club here and am thinking strongly of presenting this as a selection to choose from for the members to read....it is different from what they usually are exposed to. It is deeply informative. It is funny and a delight to read through.....everything that a "community selection" should be...who knows, perhaps I can end up creating a couple of "converts" to the World of Opera...wouldn't that be nice!!

this was a lot of fun. An incredible amount of information in a short book, including great suggestions for arias in each opera to listen for. I read it straight through and now want to go back and listen to each opera he writes about, while reading his critiques and suggestions for what to listen for.

I Met master Levine in college. He is one of the funniest humans ever. His book is expectedly insightful and riotous. He gives opera. We are forever grateful.
