What happens when five completely mature adults spend a week together at a cottage? No, it’s not the plot of a family comedy, dramedy, or reality show. It’s the situation you’ll see played out before your very eyes in “A Week in the Woods with Family.”

In this intimate portrait of real life events, celebrated author Giselle Renarde pens a fine series of letters home from the woods. Alternating between humorous, heart-wrenching, mundane, mouth-watering, board-gaming, wildlife-spotting and much more, these in-depth communications to her cat-minding sweetheart are part secret confession, part reflection on writing, part letter home from camp.

Join Giselle and her family in the woods as they take to the lake, run from friendly foxes and adjust to one another’s very special quirks. In cottage country, the dull moments are the ones to remember.

On the surface, it's letters written during a family reunion. Four adult siblings (three sisters and a brother) and their mother squeeze into a car in Toronto and head to Georgian Bay to spend the week together at a friend's rustic cabin. They're a lively, humorous, quirky bunch and clearly enjoy their yearly get-together, which is heavy on walking, eating, and re-telling family stories.

However, there are quite a few layers to the story and they peel off rather unexpectedly at times. Their father (now happily departed) was a violent alcoholic and all except the youngest sister are still suffering the effects of his abuse. There are also many-times-repeated stories of her mother's family, which the author finds horrifying to hear as an adult, but which she thought quite entertaining when told them as a child.

And then there's the girl friend to whom the author is writing the letters. I won't spoil the story, but I will say that the final revelation explained SOME but not ALL of the things I had been puzzled about during the early letters. It ain't LITTLE WOMEN, but then what family is now?

Letter writing, where one puts their words on paper, seals them in an envelope and posts them to another person, is a lost art. There was a time when publishing letters was a big deal, and it gave us a real glimpse into people's lives. Nobody in their right mind today would take a chance to bear their soul in such an intimate way. I'm glad Giselle Renarde is such an out of the box writer.

Having enjoyed the way she writes, I wasn't disappointed with these letters. They delve into an interesting life and are easy to read and present a glimpse into a mildly dysfunctional family that functions with love despite its flaws. You have to love a family member who is willing to camp yet is afraid of every creature in the woods.

Being an author who loves to delve into why people are attracted to each other, I was especially taken with her description of meeting and falling in love with her partner and their first kiss. It had every element I wish I would have thought of for a fictional plot about serendipitous relationships.

Having read some of Ms. Renarde's latest blogs, I know she's a bit discouraged about her writing career, and though I know she questions why she writes while nobody is reading her, I'm pretty sure she will continue to write because it pleases her. It sure as hell pleases me and I intend to read more of her works. Thanks for writing Giselle.
