Kurzbeschreibung

After many happy years of marriage and raising a family, Brian and Kathleen suddenly find themselves a bit lost in life. Midwesterners who’ve never traveled, Kathleen decides that what she and Brian need is a vacation, and with the help of an enthusiastic travel agent she plans a trip to Ireland in search of her roots. In beautiful, quaint Lisdoonvarna, to the couple’s surprise, they find themselves in the midst of a joyous yearly gathering dedicated to celebrating the life and work of a late Irish poet, and they rediscover something much more important than evidence of long-dead ancestors: their love for each other and for life itself.

Wieder eine echte Maeve Binchy Lesestunde. Leider kommen keine neuen Buecher mehr von ihr. Es lohnt sich immer ein wenig in ihrer Welt zu traeumen, es geht immer gut aus.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Short and sweet 20. September 2011

"A Week in Summer" is a short story by Maeve Binchy, not a novel or a novella. I am a huge fan of hers and continue to be amazed at her writing ability so if she writes it, I will read it.

Written from the perspective of Kathleen, she is describing her long marriage to Brian and some of the challenges they have faced. Over the years there have been multiple jobs, multiple moves, and sometimes not a lot of communication. Even with a long history between them, Kathleen loves her husband and it's one of her deepest desires to go on a vacation with him. The story revolves around the long-anticipated trip and what they discover about themselves and each other.

As other reviewers have mentioned, it is VERY short. I would be surprised if it translates into more than fifteen printed pages. I picked it up after I went to bed and quickly finished it before sleep. Even though it's short, it has many of the hallmarks of typical Binchy writing - quickly engrossing, interesting characters, and the setting of Ireland. At the beginning, it was excellent but I thought the ending was abrupt and choppy. Even though it's a short story, there needed to be a smoother, longer wind down at the end.

Good but not great

What a lovely story! Only Maeve Binchy can pack a whole lot of story into a few short pages. I felt as though I was right there in the story with the characters... and such a sweet story. Only 99 cents... and you won't be disappointed. It's short, so curl up on the couch some rainy night, or sit outdoors under the maple tree and savor every single word and lose yourself in this treat from one of the world's truly gifted story-tellers!

Not even worth the dollar I spent on it. I should have looked to see how long the story was, although I wouldnt even consider this a story, it was more like a few paragraphs. Totally useless!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very sweet story 18. August 2011

I've always loved Maeve Binchy's books and this short story is no different. Short stories are just that...short. They aren't novels or novellas, and Binchy succeeded in this one with starting out with a problem and finding a way to solve it and wrapping it up within her story.

Brian Merriman has gone from one thing to the other in life. Dairy cattle farming, growing flax and corn, and finally he became a mathematics teacher. All of these jobs were in different states in the American midwest, and their two girls, instead of having them constantly changing schools, were put into boarding school. Kathy, the wife, needed to have a job that she could do anywhere, so she cooks and bakes for people and delivers her goods to people's homes. But Kathy wants a vacation. She and Brian have never taken a vacation.

Brian is a very depressed man, and how to get him out of his depression, much less out of the house is Kathy's dilemma. There is a lot of humor in this story as well as some tender moments.

Nothing has been given away, so the story still awaits. I found it to be an excellent story from an excellent writer. Her latest book is on my TBR list.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Maeve Binchy is rarely less than excellent... 22. April 2013

and she's very good here. I bought this because I just purchased her last book, "A Week In Winter", so it only seemed right to have this as a companion piece. It's a sweet story. No surprises. And just because you know where the story's going doesn't mean the journey isn't a pleasant one. Buy it and enjoy it. You'll not regret it.
