The book offers black-and-white prints of original fashion plates for the years 1860-1912. Most years are given one page, depicting 1-3 brides, older and younger sisters and often the mother of the bride. Only a few years are omitted. Scattered in between are several pages depicting wedding hairstyles, shoes, underwear, nightwear, toiletry bags, wrappers, dressing gowns, fans, parasols, hairpins, flowers and and and... The book also shows dresses for widowed brides, matron brides, other wedding guests, bridesmaids and children. Although it has no photographs the quality of the pictures is very good, and the amazing variety of trimmings can be very well seen. The book contains no patterns or instructions; the only texts are a general introduction into the topic of Victorian weddings in general and the original remarks to the pictures. Often these explain the materials used for the dresses, but sometimes only the designer is named. This is a very interessting book for anyone interested in costume, but a truly indispensible read if you want to create your own Victorian/Edwardian wedding gown or if you are looking for appropriate hairstyles or accessories for a vintage wedding. I definitely recommend it!
