The author has apparently lived a life packed with event. The places where he has been, the eminent people whom he has known, the incredible things that he has achieved - wow! The name of Baron Münchausen immediately springs to mind.
Where the haunting of Borley Rectory is concerned, however, if you know much about the subject you only have to read a few of the chapters to realise that this book is a hoax. The chronology of many of his stories doesn't, as they say nowadays, "stack up"; neither do the explanations that he gives for many of the supposedly paranormal phenomena (whether or not these phenomena were really paranormal is another matter).
Having been a Borley enthusiast since my mid-teens, I bought this book very shortly after it was published and took it with me when I went to stay with my late mother for a few days. She found and perused it one evening while I was out at the pub, and on my return she said, "Do you mean to say that you paid £10 for that ridiculous book?" A pretty fair summing up of its value, I think.
