Back Cover Text

The photography social media is abuzz these days with a new myth—that of the “Rockstar” photographer. A fledgling shooter can easily get the impression that the ticket to success is to become one of these fashionable icons—heavy on style, light on skill—who seem to spend more time in front of the camera than behind it. But the Rockstar myth is hurting a profession that already faces daunting challenges.

The inconvenient truth is that it’s harder than ever to forge success as a professional event photographer. That’s why it’s critical to learn the real skills and secrets that will help you succeed day to day. Not the motivational, “Buy a BMW and believe in yourself” stuff, but the hands-on, practical principles that generate business in the real world.

The Rockstar myth is not unique to photography. In the Internet-driven world we live in, it’s hard to thrive in any field. Economies are tough and global competition is ruthless. It is tempting to look for easy, sexy shortcuts to success. Because of that, a huge cottage industry has erupted, filling freelancers and small businesspeople with hopes that if they only take this course or that seminar, they, too, can enjoy six- or seven-figure lifestyles. Most of the people offering the seminars are not real successes themselves.

This book is the antidote to that puffery. Interestingly, it is written by one of the few actual “rockstars” of the photography business, Gary Fong. He earned millions in wedding photography before retiring at 42. But he didn’t do it by reciting affirmations, buying a BMW, or changing his wardrobe every six months and blogging about it. He did it by applying the valuable principles and trade secrets he shares in this book.

So You Want to Be a Rockstar Photographer is for new professionals, passionate hobbyists, “mom-tographers,” and anyone interested in learning more about how to thrive in the real world of event photography. What you may discover, if you read this book, is that when you stop trying to be a rockstar, and start focusing on the process of being a thoughtful, client-centered pro, you just might become an outstanding success.

Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Gary Fong is a world-renowned inventor, author, lecturer, entrepreneur and former wedding photographer. His career began straight out of college, where he introduced "Storybook Weddings", a concept where the studio specialized in the creation of custom albums as the key feature. In 2001, he saw digital photography's coming influence, and purchased the latest digital photo lab equipment. This eventually became the lab at Pictage.com, creating the first and largest Pro Digital online lab in the U.S. After retiring from photography, a lampshade in his hotel room inspired him to build the Gary Fong Lightsphere, soft-light diffuser for flash units. It has become a staple accessory for Professional Photographers worldwide

5.0 von 5 Sternen You Rock Gary! 7. Oktober 2012
Von Brandy Lee - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
While I was considering photography for a new career this book came highly recommended. Once I learned more of Gary's story as a photographer and innovator, it greatly helped me understand a lot about the business, the challenges and the tips needed to succeed in this business, and how he did it so very well. I enjoyed reading of his humble beginnings and how it happens to the best of us. It was a great and enjoyable read in which I couldn't wait to get back to. I would recommend this book over and over again. No matter what your experience is as a photographer today you will walk away with things you won't ever forget.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Excellent read for ANY photographer - Amateur or Pro 4. August 2012
Von S.Lee - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Gary reveals and expands on the growing problems so prevalent in the photography industry with class and solid information. This book should have been written 6-7 years ago! Not only is it a well of information for the new professional photographer, but also offers up solid tips for the seasoned pro as well. Well written & to the point, the book highlights the myth and aura behind the growing army of self-declared "Rockstar" photographers who have hit the photography industry with lightning speed in the past few years. A great read for anyone who is tired of all the self-help type advice coming from countless photography workshops and seminars. Just go read it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Want to be a Rockstar Photographer? Read this book first! 8. August 2012
Von Theresa Santoro - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Wonky Kindle editing aside, this book is a slightly uncomfortable look into the real world of professional wedding photography. I say slightly uncomfortable, because the stories Gary shares are the true grit side of the business that no one likes to look at directly, but is there staring us all in the face. Every photographer will tell you that their insides turn just a bit before every important once in a lifetime gig, because sometimes the outcome is not what you expected. Happens to all of us. We all have a shoot gone wrong.

What Gary demonstrates and teaches, that a 1500.00 workshop won't, is that professional photography is not all "sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows", and that you can't just jump in, and shoot on Program and pray that your images come out ok. As Gary points out, not everything can be fixed in photoshop with the action of the moment.

In addition to the horror stories, Gary gives sage advice on what to do to arm yourself in the event you are sued. Does Gary take some of his stories to the extreme? Sure he does. But so do the workshops in the other direction. Gary will help you to find the balance, and if you can read the horror stories, and know it can absolutely happen to you, and you still want to be a rockstar photographer, then by all means... Pick up the camera and go! But read this book first!

Slow and steady wins the race. Know what you are doing, and know what to do in the event of a massive fail.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic! 4. August 2012

This should be distributed to every person who wants to become a photographer. The industry has taken an enormous hit with saturation of people who have zero clue how to do this professionally and have had one of the photography "elite" charge them hundreds of dollars for a seminar that told them to believe in themselves and it would just all work out. Ridiculous battlefield out there for all of us. Gary helps navigate it. I plan on using this as an evangelist tool, mailing them to people who should read a copy.
