“This 'unofficial' companion book is essential for fans of Breaking Bad and for those who want to learn more about what some have called the 'greatest television show.'” — Library Journal

"The Only Guide You Will Ever Need… Reading through the book, which grabbed me like a fiction bestseller, I constantly felt the need to pull out my DVDs and watch again as I read. This is literally a companion guide that needs to go right next to your complete series, and be thumbed through, bookmarked and read as you view the show. Wanna Cook? is an interactive treasure you will read again and again, just like the show requires multiple viewings… I cannot recommend this book enough." — Biff Bam Pop!

"Wanna Cook? succeeds in no small part by being not only an excellent guide to fans of the show, but also a well-researched, authoritative and most importantly, entertaining re-examination of one of the best shows in the history of television." — Forces of Geek

"For five seasons, the AMC television series Breaking Bad, which was created and produced by Vince Gilligan, garnered both critical acclaim and widespread audience appeal. Historian Guffey and pop culture writer Koontz (Faith and Choice in the Works of Joss Whedon) offer an insightful companion text to the Emmy Award–winning drama, which aired from 2008 to 2013. Besides introductory and concluding essays analyzing the production and its characters, the authors provide an episode-by-episode recap of the series. Titles, air dates, and the director of each episode are included. Fun facts, character analyses, film and production notes, and dialog highlights are found in each chapter under the headings 'Lab Notes' and 'Special Ingredients,' a clever reference to the show’s plotline about a chemistry teacher who 'breaks bad' and turns to a life of crime as a methamphetamine producer and dealer after being diagnosed with cancer. VERDICT This 'unofficial' companion book is essential for fans of Breaking Bad and for those who want to learn more about what some have called the 'greatest television show.'” — Library Journal

Wanna Cook? Gotta Have 8. Mai 2014
Von Allen Smalling - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This wonderful book has a somewhat misleading title. Despite its ample size (434 pages), WANNA COOK? THE COMPLETE, UNOFFICIAL COMPANION TO BREAKING BAD is not, nor was it intended to be, a 'Complete' compendium of trivia about the groundbreaking AMC show. For example, while each chapter deals with a new episode, they don't list each and every song in the series -- for that, you can go to IMDb dot com and get the info. for free. The book's 'Unofficial' designation is somewhat undercut by the inclusion of an interview with Michael Slovis, cinematographer for most of the show's episodes.

However, the rest of the title pays off handsomely. WANNA COOK? is indeed a powerful 'Companion' to BREAKING BAD, and a celebration too: a kind of follow-up course in what authors Ensley Guffey and Dale Koontz find interesting, and I'm guessing you will too. Certainly it's leagues above the common "fan book" cooked up (excuse me) in response to a hit show or movie. Instead of documenting every soundtrack song, the authors talk about a few that particularly interest them, such as the esoteric but witty use of the Italian song "Crapa Pelada" ("Bald Head") by the postwar pop group *Quartetto Cetra* to refer to central character Walter White and his hair loss from chemotherapy. In over sixty chapters the authors have an unerring knack of answering questions we have about the show -- even those we haven't thought to ask yet. To me, the discussion of "Uncle" Salamanca's bell and how its presence is echoed by similar sound effects is worth the price of the book. What do federal prosecutors mean by a "Queen for a Day" plea? How and why are lawyers allowed to advertise? What are the psychological preconditions that make an individual "break bad" anyway, with higher and higher levels of violence? How were the special effects obtained, and of what symbolic purpose are the photographic effects -- tinted lenses and such? All this is assembled by two highly-educated authors who have (let's not mince words) close to an obsession about this show -- and bless them for it!

The effect of this is to make WANNA COOK? compulsively readable. I found it anything but dull, even when the authors were holding forth on topics I strenuously disagree with. (They think time-lapse photography is enchanting; I think it's a visual cliché in the making.) But never mind -- see all of BREAKING BAD if you haven't already, because this book is not a Cliff's Notes to help you fill in missing episodes but an open door to an even greater appreciation of this seminal series. Guffey and Koontz try strenuously to avoid plot spoilers but really some giveaways are close to inevitable in a thoughtful book like this. After WANNA COOK? you may well want to see the whole series again. Soon you'll be telling friends and fans about the nature of Junior's disability, how the trick shot of Jesse's heroin high was achieved and just generally, why BREAKING BAD is so good. And that ain't bad at all. As of now, the offering price puts it in the same league as much thinner books on the subject.

Absolutely Essential for Any BrBa Fan 5. Mai 2014
Von Andru J. Reeve - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

I approached this book with great trepidation, thinking it might be yet another quickie cash-in. Thankfully, this is everything I hoped it would be, and so much more. Not only is it a handy and informative episode guide, this hefty tome also delivers several insightful essays on what will soon be universally regarded as The Greatest Television Show In The History of The Medium. I cannot comprehend ANY fan of the show being disappointed with this well-researched, beautifully-assembled companion to Breaking Bad. Highly-recommended.

Well worth the wait!! 21. April 2014
Von D. J. Murphy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
The book came out long after Breaking Bad wrapped last year, but I am delighted with it, and like the previous reviewer, it made me want to watch the series again, and I am doing so.
The author breaks down each episode with interesting details, but very few spoilers. In addition to notable insights into each episode, it provides fascinating information on such subjects as chemistry, air traffic controlling, law enforcement, health insurance and so forth. It seems to be well-researched and informed, and is quite humorous in places. If you love Breaking Bad, you will Love this book!!

Great Breaking Bad companion 8. Mai 2014
Von Heresy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Great reviews and insight into each episode without giving too many spoilers (though some of the essays between the episodes might give away stuff so careful if you have not seen the whole series.) There are a few suppositions by the author I disagree with but overall a great companion piece to go along with the best television program ever.
