The Double Video "Walking With Beasts" includes all the BBC episodes. It is an introduction to the animals (predominantly mammals) that roamed the earth from the extinction of the dinosaurs until the rise of early humans. The sequel to the BBC's acclaimed and highly successful series "Walking With Dinosaurs", Beasts also uses a combination of clever special effects and computer-generated imagery to create a realistic world as it may have appeared millions of years ago. As to be expected from any BBC nature programme, the images are visually stunning; the prehistoric animals look impressively lifelike, interacting seamlessly with each other and their environment to create an entire world that could have been photographed only yesterday. Walking With Beasts has a host of little touches and flourishes that add to the feeling of realism (the animals knock over the cameras, pebbles hit the lens), which make this programme a success as a piece of pure entertainment and prehistoric escapism. Anyone who buys the video should also check out the accompanying book by Tim Haines, available under 'Englische Bücher'. It has loads of background information and stunning still shots from the series.

Another one of the BBC's "Walking with..." series, this DVD covers the time from the extinction of the dinosaurs to the last ice age. In six episodes, the predominant animals (mostly mammals) of their era are presented.
Again, high standards are met. The animals' shapes and motions are animated with high, life-like quality, the programs are full of information not only about the portrayed species but also their environment, the pictures are beautiful and the episodes are not only pieced-together pictures, but have actual stories which never fail to grip and touch. We feel the pain of the little (only over 1 ton) Indricotherium calf sent away by its mother, we triumph with the Smilodon over its kill, we fever with the Australopithecus clan in ther fight with a Dinofelis predator...
Maybe the science behind this series is not always flawless and accuracy is sacrificed in favor of a good narrative, and of the illusion of actually being there. Giving the viewer the illusion of partaking in events that have happened millions of years ago is the great achievement of "Walking With Beasts" though (and also of the related DVDs, "Walking With Monsters" and "Walking With Dinosaurs"). Highly recommended.
