Ok I admit it. I have been sedentary for a very long time. I am in my fifties, diabetic and I know better. And, heck, I even live in Tracktown USA the home of Steve Prefontaine! I almost used my bad allergies to not get out of bed today. I picked up Susan's book and even though I am not truly motivated to be honest I know deep down that it's pretty dangerous to not be moving. So, using Susan as my coach and reading "if you're diabetic walking clears sugar out of the blood", I got my little dog (he has been asking me to walk him daily), reluctantly put my sneakers on and went. It's not like I didn't already know this fact but reading it and "hearing" it again helped. I have no excuses whatsoever. Not only do I have a park a block from my house with laps, albeit cement laps, I also have a treadmill in the garage and plenty of videos for the Wii Fit and the a DVD player. I even have the treadmill set up with a small TV and a DVD player in front of it. And my Scwinn Airdyne by its side to alternate my workout.

I do agree with the author...listening to music helps when walking but don't read! I fell off my treadmill this way trying to read from my Kindle! Reading's too tough when you walk.

I know from experience when, in the past, I have walked daily and/or hit the gym I felt better. I got to a point where I didn't care. I even started with green juices a week ago but wasn't walking. 18 years ago I committed to it. I forced myself to put on my walking shoes when I woke up each day and to do it first thing every morning. All Ii did was walk 20 brisk minutes a day and wouldn't let myself miss a day. At first I was sore and had shin splints but after 2 weeks I got VERY strong. JUST from 20 brisk minutes a day. And I really did lose weight and inches. I felt much better. So listen if nothing else do that. Walking really does work for fitness and weight loss even though people tell you otherwise.

The one thing I would like more from this book is more coaching. I want more cheerleading. I want a "Bible" to pick up daily to get me walking. I appreciate that that happened today. Susan...write an adjunct to this book and give me even more of that...specific to walking.

I can't honestly say that I will buy a pedometer, perhaps I will, or even do the 12 week program which Susan maps out nicely, but I will get walking again for those twenty minutes and add weights again a little later. I have to admit I don't like walking at all but I do like how I feel after I walk and that will have to be my motivating factor right now. I do love lifting weights but I am not a gym member anymore. Susan gives some other things to do to get moving which I like and will hopefully incorporate.

Susan is a very good author. I have her smoothies book and her book on low carb eating. I have truly bugged her with emails and she wrote back. I haven't yet gotten the answer to why I have a hunger problem no matter what I do but I am pretty sure it's from diabetes and leptin resistance. Overall this book got my ass out of bed and walking. It's a good book. I will keep referring to it.

This book can be summarized in one sentence: "Get a step counter, measure your average steps per day and slowly start walking more until you reach 12000 steps per day." Do not waste your money on this!

You will need a pedometer to count your steps, but Susan gives you a number of suggestions about where to get them, along with pros and cons of the different types. Basis for the program is to start by determining your base step count, then adding steps each day until you reach 12,000 steps, which will help in weight loss. Program is set up for 12 weeks; you can of course take longer. Key thought is: It's important to DO something, not just sit around all day every day. More to it than just that, but well worth reading.

This book is nothing special, but it might help someone if they are new to walking for exercise. There is some useful information regarding pedometer's or measuring your walk. You should log your walks, and there is a section the rationale for doing this.
