This was such a fun, cute, real, laugh-out-loud read! Finished in one sitting. I want to hang out with Lucy, Will, and Jen. I was sold on this book from the very first paragraph, and I was not disappointed. It completely set up the rest of the book, and Matthews kept the style of writing consistent.

"I am locked in my bathroom trying desperately to get the overpowering smell of Indian Summer potpourri out of my nostrils. I'm not sure whether I should get some nasal spray and try to flush it out, or just blow my nose until I can't smell it anymore. I don't have any spray, so I try the nose-blowing technique until I give myself a headache, then sink to my knees on the hard tile floor and begin to cry-- big, fat teardrops that roll hotly down my cheeks."

I *had* to find out what was going on. I felt like I was reading someone's journal rather than a novel. There were no over-the-top, unrealistic, "I can't believe that happened" moments. There was no dramatic beginning or end. Everything was simple and real (like Lucy's fall on the first day of training; Jen and Lucy getting drunk and singing old New Kids on the Block songs; the SO obvious way that Will was falling for Lucy and Lucy's cluelessness; Lucy's horrible job interview). I LOVED the way Matthews weaved Lucy's inner dialogue into the story. The ending was a bit abrupt, but only because I wanted more of the characters! If you love chick-lit, romantic comedy, or looking into other peoples' lives, you will love Lucy Wagner Gets In Shape!

I read this in one sitting and was looking for more. My only complaint about this book was that I didn't want it to end! Looking forward to reading more Claire Matthews books in the future.

I got a real kick out of this novel. The first person narrative is REAL and the heroine is witty and honest. Her friends are fun (the kind of friends I wish I had), the banter made me laugh, and the love story...I could feel it.

Lucy is BFFs with Will and Jenny. They've hung out for ages. They know each other's favorite foods, they rally around each other when there's a break up, they help each other pass exams and prepare for job interviews. So...imagine Lucy's surprise when after a rough break up (her bf was cheating, the jerk), she discovers that Will has feelings for her and has for quite some time and well...she has feelings for him too.

Is it a rebound thing? Something causes Will to think so. There's misunderstandings, petty arguments, trust issues, surprising revelations, and Lucy is faced with making a difficult decision: career or love? Sacrifice or make someone else sacrifice? Rebound or real thing?

Meanwhile, they are training for a major running/hiking/kayaking event to prove to Lucy's ex that she can do it. "I am proving to myself, and to Paul, that I am not a fat person in a skinny person's body. That I am a woman of substance and conviction. That I am woman worthy of love, and I'm every bit as tough and brave as Langley whatever-the-hell-her-name-is."

But really, she's getting HER LIFE in shape, not her tush, and it's a hilarious ride all the way. Too many laugh out loud moments to list them all on amazon. My favorite, however:

Jenny: "Was it like, 'stayed out in the heat too long' body odor or like, 'European earthy guy' body odor?"

Lucy: "I don't know-is there a difference?"

Jenny: "God, yes. European body odor kind of turns me on. It's like stink with a sexy accent."
